HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Mussorgsky/Prokofiev – Pictures At An Exhibition/Symphonie Classique (CPO/Giulini)

front_small_boxset
Although he never received the publicity accorded to some more famous conductors, Carlo Maria Giulini was equal to, or better than, all such “star” conductors. In fact, Giulini was quite simply one of the half dozen or so greatest conductors of the 20th century.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Telarc) Bizet/Grieg – Carmen/Peer Gynt Suites (Slatkin)

front_small_boxset
Let me say, normally it doesn’t make sense to rip a digital vinyl that was produced in the late 70s (before the coming of CD) with PCM technology far under the 24bit-96Khz level. Othersides, why not? It sounds definitely much better from the vinyl than from the CD.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted anything from the Franklin Mint collection, so I figured I might as well continue the recent “Peer Gynt-o-rama” (thanks to AlKat for coining that phrase!) with this performance.

As always, if anyone has requests for other titles in this set, please add them to the comments or PM me directly. Please include the album numbers from the master list with your requests.

Very Rare HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) Italo Montemezzi – L’Amore Dei Tre Re (Moffo/Siepi/Domingo)

First of all, let me say…if someone would have pretended to be paid 50$, for playing this recording to me, after I have heard “this” Cesare Siepi, I would have given him 100$ more. This is the best and most stunning “Basso Imperiale” that I ever heard in my life.

Rare HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Frederik Chopin – Piano Concertos 1 & 2 (Vasary)

front_small_boxset1
Vasary`s 1964/5 performances of the Chopin piano concertos are extremely enjoyable pieces of music making. I rank them right up there with the top of the field, and the field of these concertos is quite packed indeed.
For the concerto in E minor, I prefer Vasary`s straight-forward approach: consistent tempi and a fine display of delicacy in the slower, second movement. He rarely demonstrates flashy feats of look-at-me “personal artistry” which pervades other performances, such as with Zimerman and the Polish Fest. Orch. on DG.

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Jaques Offenbach – The Tales Of Hoffmann (Sutherland/Domingo)

front_small_boxset
This is the first of many recordings that attempts to return this opera–which the composer left unfinished at his death–to something more in line with what he envisioned. While it may work in the theater, it seems fitful on record, particularly with spoken dialogue. The cast, with Plácido Domingo in the title role and Joan Sutherland playing all four heroines, has long made this recording a first-choice Hoffmann among some critics.
