Thank you Trottar for this great chest of beauties
It would take a long, long time to write all that could be written about this historic box. Here, you have three of the best musicians ever in their respective fields playing some of Beethoven’s very best music. I now have a large classical music collection. This box is one of the gemstones of my collection. I love it. Reference grade.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (HM) Luzzasco Luzzaschi – Concerto Delle Dame Di Ferrara

front_small_boxset
Did Luzzasco Luzzaschi invent Bel Canto?
This questions is not quite as frivolous as it might sound. The lifetime of Luzzaschi, from 1545 to 1607, framed an immense revolution in European music: the passage of preeminence from the Flemings to the Italians, the emergence of secular music as the equal of sacred in sophistication, the transformation of musical forms and theory from the dispassionate Apollonian beauties of polyphony to the hyperpassionate Dionysian beauties of madrigalism and monody, the sudden social acceptance of women singers in courtly and urban music, the Birth of Baroque in short.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Requiem (Giulini)

front_small_boxsetEven though the corruption of the Heirarchy, mainly about power, put him off the Church, and made it difficult for him to believe, Verdi expresses here his faith, or longing for faith. The Giulini recording of Verdi’s “Requiem” has long been a favorite of many listeners, both for the conducting and the quality of the soloists, most of whom were at the peak of their careers.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) H. Berlioz – Requiem (Munch)

Reposted, now with FF links
Charles Munch died in 1968, the year this Berlioz Requiem appeared. Munich is an unlikely place to look for Berlioz, but in several ways this remake is better than the original release with the BSO from 1960. Although only eight years separates the two, DG’s sound is considerably cleaner and more vivid than RCA’s.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Franz Liszt – A Faust Symphony (Ansermet)

front_small_boxset Liszt’s Eine Faust-Symphonie, based on the Faust legend, is an hour-long work for tenor, choir and orchestra, based on the Faust legend. The Suisse Romande Orchestra take to this complex score, one with which they could hardly have been familiar, with clear enthusiasm and imbue the performance with alertness and vivacity. The woodwind playing of the orchestra (not always enjoyed by critics) in the Gretchen movement is especially sensitive. Ansermet is direct, honest and conveys emotional intensity without resorting to sentimentality or the vulgarity to which conductors of this music are sometimes prone.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Otello (Vickers/Freni)

front_small_boxset
You can get this Otello in the EMI studio version being reviewed here or as a live performance on Opera d’Oro, both almost identical in every detail musically. Vickers was, after Del Monaco’s retirement, the supreme Otello of his generation, with a huge, magnificent voice and heartbreaking pathos–he doesn’t bluster or fake it emotionally for even a bar. His death scene is one of the great things in the Verdi canon on disc. Freni is equally wonderful, exemplary in eveyr way musically and a prime example of how to act through the voice. Her Desdemona is ravishing and her last-act solos heartrending.

Many thanks to our friend from Michigan Lake for this gift.
This is the recording by which others should be judged. Solti captures the raucousness of Falstaff, using and emphasizing the horns like great comedic guffaws. Geraint Evans oozes unctiousness and Freni sweetly takes on the only aria in the whole opera.
