HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Richard Strauss – Death And Transfiguration/Four Last Songs (Karajan/Janowitz)

front_small_boxsetGundula Janowitz had a very beautiful voice that critics like to describe as “creamy,” whatever that means. Strauss had a life-long love affair with the soprano voice. He even married one–not just the voice, the whole woman, of course. His Four Last Songs constitute his dying tribute, and they are probably the most hedonistically gorgeous vocal works in existence. Herbert vo Karajan was a Strauss specialist, as was Janowitz, and together they contrive to perform the songs about as perfectly as they ever have been.

Ever since I started posting rips from the Franklin Mint collection, people have been asking me to post a complete FM cycle of the Beethoven symphonies. Right before I upgraded the cartridge and preamp, I ripped all nine of them, with the full intent of posting them. Well, one thing led to another and they never got posted. Time to do something about that…

These will be posted on an “as I have time” basis, but I should have them all up fairly soon. Starting with Symphony No. 1 (of course), I’ll be posting them one by one on the front page. Each time I post a new one, I’ll bump the post to the top of the home page. As you would probably expect, the recordings will vary in sound quality. Some will be stereo, some will be mono. But all of them are highly listenable in their own right.

As always, if anyone has requests for other titles in this set, please add them to the comments or PM me directly.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Antonin Dvorak – Requiem (Kertesz)

front_small_boxsetDvorak’s Requiem should be as well-known as those of Verdi, Brahms, Berlioz, and Mozart. Though it is not as tuneful as the Verdi, it is powerful, lyrical, and dramatic. This recording came out on LP in the early ’70s and has been hailed as the definitive one almost since it appeared. The sound is superb, and the newcomer to this music, on hearing this, is bound to wonder why this piece is not better-known. I wonder why every time I hear it.

HD-Vinyl 96/24 (Decca) Gioacchino Rossini – Stabat Mater (Kertesz)

front_small_boxset
Powerful soloists in bel canto voice render this recording, one to be remembered. Every phrase and idea sung coherently, without tendency toward “musical mush.” Have heard several other recordings that have disappointed both listener and choirister. I am always on the lookout for music that broadens my horizons, and this quirky and irresistable piece is a wonderful discovery. A bonus is hearing Pavarotti again!
