Audiophile HD-Vinyls 96/24 (Decca) Johannes Brahms – The Four Symphonies (Solti)

front-small-boxset
I’ve been listening many times to this set, particularly the 1st Symphony, and my opinion has changed, concerning other great performances of other conductors. Now I am in absolute awe of it. Why has this collection changed my mind? In one word: bass. The low register instruments, especially the basses and cellos, stand strongly in these recordings, and the result is I’m discovering a *lot* of depth to the composition that had escaped me before. Brahms turns out to be a much better composer than other recordings had let me discover before. In certain passages, I focus totally on the low strings, just to see what they’re up to, and I’m richly rewarded…

HD-Vinyls 96/24 (DGG) Peter Tchaikowsky – Symphonic Works & Concertos on 7 LPs (Karajan)

front-small-boxset A wonderful box, original from 1968 in Mint condition, for 5 bucks from a flea market 😉 I myself have never been a huge fan of Karajan but these recordings of Tchaikovsky with the Berlin Philharmonic are breathtaking. Though there are tempo modifications made by Karajan to the score, they are certainly sensible make this performance all the more moving. Highly reccommended to Karajan and, particular, non-Karajan fans alike.

Rare Vinyls 16/44 (HRE) Umberto Giordano – Fedora (Tebaldi/Di Stefano)

front-small-boxset
Incredible finding in a flea market – Near Mint –  for 50 Cents
This is probably one of the MOST pirated recordings by Renata Tebaldi. First of all, because she NEVER recorded the role, second because of the tremendous work by Di Stefano. Basile’s conducting is superb, and this opera has many fascinating musical moments, it’s no wonder so many wish Renata had recorded this role. This is the ONLY extant recording of Tebaldi in this role, at least until, or if, the Chicago performances with Bjorling ever surface. Do yourself a favor, get this, even when the sound is not HiFi (Live).

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Rossini/Respighi – La Boutique Fantasque

front-small-boxset
Complete new rip, with the current engines of 2013/14
Respighi’s recasting of a clutch of Rossini tunes, La boutique fantasque, is full of loud, confident music, and in spite of a marked strain of hamminess is undeniably infectious and enjoyable. The LSO under Maestro Gardelli plays it all with a straight face and makes a real success of things. Horns are bright and brilliant, strings ebullient, everything as gross and brash as the music demands, switching to a pleasurably melting and sentimental mood for the ‘Valse lente’ movement and culminating in a noisy, declamatory and expertly rendered fugato. There are plenty of versions of La boutique fantasque in the catalogue, but unless one is particularly addicted to Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops (RCA), this recording is the one I would go for.

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Divox) Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons (Giuliano Carmignola)

front-small-boxset
I have many versions of the Four Seasons, on CDs and vinyls around 20 different performances and the comparison to each other is always very interesting. I often wonder what Vivaldi would have thought of all the interpretations that are out there. I must confess, almost all are among the best performances you can get, with old or modern instruments, playing sprightly and spirited Vivaldi like God commands. OK, now forget everything you thought, you would know about the Four Seasons and who ever has performed them. This all was before the gritty and hyper-energized recording by Giuliano Carmignola revolutionized everyone’s idea of what the Four Seasons should sound like. This is one of the two super performances of the “Quattro Stagioni”  by super violinist Carmignola.
Audiophile alert: ultra high!

Performance value: unmesurable high!
