Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) Ariel Ramirez – Misa Criolla/Navidad Nuestra (José Carreras)

front-small-boxset
This excellent album is something to treasure. If you ever buy only one disc with Jose Carreras, this one might just be the one!!!
Although this was recorded just before the treatment for leukemia started (I believe Carreras already knew about it), it was the perfect choice at that time. His voice retains it’s beautiful pureness throughout, which no one can match, and he doesn’t need to force his instrument. Listen to some of the phrasing, especially when he is singing pianissimo in the slow passages, it’s almost unbelievebly beautiful. The way he “speaks” the words and the depth of emotion, he is inside the music, inside the the words. That the composer was present (playing the piano) does of course add to the glorious result of these sacred pieces.

Many thanks for this beauty to our friend Booksaregood
This recording is amazing, beautiful, audiophile in every way. It was used by several studios and magazines to test HiFi components.
Among them this here: AUDIOREVIEWS

Ideally Bach’s wonderful St.John Passion should be heard in the original German in order to fully appreciate the ideal marriage of text and music which makes Bach such a paragon of excellence amongst composers. There are some excellent versions available and if I could gently push you in the direction of this wonderful and clean recorded little known Chamber Ensemble of the Smithsonian Society, then I would be satisfied that I’ve accomplished my good deed for the day.
Recorded 22-28 March 1989 at the Renwick Gallery, Washington D.C.

Many thanks for this beauty to our friend Jean-Luc
I wish I could find adequate words to do justice to this recording but I doubt that anyone can. If you are familiar with the music, you probably already own this version. If not, you need to get yourself a copy. Words I could use would include masterful, elegant, brilliand and ultimately beautiful. Blissful! If you are someone unfamiliar with this music, this recording will win you over.

HD Vinyl 96/24 (Decca) Richard Strauss – Alpine Symphony (Solti)

front-small-boxsetReposted – now with FF links
George Solti had a long and illustrious tenure with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and many of his recordings were definitive. For example his Mahler’s and Beethoven’s Symphonies are ranked by many including me as some of the very best ever recorded. Some critics have faulted Solti’s interpretation of this work for its headlong tempos. They do take some getting used to if your paradigm is Karajan or Kempe; but if you have sometimes found this work rather long-winded, a quick sprint to the summit and back may prove more enjoyable than a moderate trudge. Solti lingers enough to evoke atmosphere, even if he’s more interested in conveying the evanescent dramatic tensions that course through this work. The more I hear it, the more I like Solti’s approach, though I realize that it might not be for everyone. If you’ve never heard the work before, rest assured that there is never a dull moment in Solti’s version.

These „Pictures“ are not, as you may think, orchestrated by Ravel, but by Vladimir Ashkenazy. A little bit different, here and there, as in the Ravel orchestration, but a really fantastic work.

HD-Vinyl (Mono)24/96 (Philips) Frederik Chopin – Complete Walzer (Brailowsky)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Trottar for this state of the Art
I think that this is the best recoding of Chopin’s waltzes ever. Brailowsky’s approach (light, “humourous”) is perfect for them. Alexander Brailowsky has long been one of the most forgotten, underrated pianist there is out there. He is well known for his astounding virtuosity, and his wide breadth of styles. Relatively well known on the Saint-Saens circut, Brailowsky now brings his talent to Chopin.

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (DGG) Sergeji Rachmaninov – Piano Concerto No. 2 (Richter)

front-small-boxset
Although the late Sviatoslav Richter spent his later years concentrating on Bach, Beethoven, and Haydn, he never completely abandoned the music of his native country. His reading of Rachmaninov’s most popular concerto, captured in fine late-’50s stereo, is one of the most glorious ever recorded. Richter’s amazing technique is completely up to the demands of Rachmaninov’s difficult writing, and he plays the heart-on-sleeve melodies with such refined intensity that they never sound sentimental. This performance is a truly amazing example of great pianism, very strongly supported by the fine orchestra and its little-known conductor.
