Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Decca) Edward Grieg – Piano Concerto (Curzon)

Curzon delivers one of his best ‘performances’ of Grieg’s Piano Concerto, with plenty of drive, a touch of aristocracy and a believably ‘live’ sounding aural experience on disc. He was notoriously difficult to please and refused publication of many of his otherwise good recordings. This one was not a problem and that is a guide as to its musical quality. It achieved ‘reference’ status almost immediately and has never slipped from that position in the 60 years since which is a remarkable achievement.

Many thanks for this beauty to our friend Jean-Luc
Antal Dorati was probably the great dance conductor of our age, and he pioneered recording the complete Tchaikovsky ballets. He made an outstanding stereo Nutcracker for Mercury Living Presence. Fine as that version is, this one is even better because the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra simply plays the music more elegantly than the London Symphony Orchestra on the earlier recording. In fact, this has been the version of choice for a couple of decades now. –David Hurwitz

HD-Vinyl 96k24b (EMI) Leos Janacek – Sinfonietta/Taras Bulba (Rattle)

If you ever wanted to know, where “Emerson, Lake & Palmer” took the melody of their “Knife Edge” from…
Apparently Janacek never composed a classical symphony. “Taras Bulba” is a kind of symphonic folk-epic in three movements, a dramatic program piece based on scenes from Gogol’s novella of the same title. The historic Taras Bulba, depicted factually by Gogol, was a Cossack nationalist, a hero in the rebellion against the Poles. Janacek was something of a pan-Slavic nationalist himself, with a lifelong reverence for Russia; his “Taras Bulba” was composed to memorialize the massacre of Russians in World War 1. The “Sinfonietta” was also conceived as a tribute to heroic soldiers, specifically the Czech Armed Forces, to whom it was dedicated. It began as a trumpet fanfare for a Sokol gymnastic festival in 1926; the trumpets ring out boldly in all five movements.
