HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Ludwig van Beethoven – All Sonatas for Violin & Piano (Haebler/Szeryng)

front-small-boxset
All our hearts and thanks fly to
Jean-Luc for this beautiful gift
My friends, in front of the Genius of Beethoven, I swear, I don’t know, which releases I love more: the Oborin/Oistrakh ones or these marvellous Haebler/Szeryng gems. Both pairs of gigantic performers are as great as you can never never get again in ten lifes. This catapults Jean-Luc in the heart of everyone, who loves Beethoven, as the most beloved brother, that life can bring to anyone. This is an outstanding box that includes the great “Kreutzer” sonata as well as Beethoven’s less well-known works for the piano and violin. The opus 96 sonata in particular is outstanding. The listener will greatly enjoy exploring using this collection to explore Beethoven’s ten sonatas for these instruments.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Philips) Daniel Chorzempa Plays Johann Sebastian Bach

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Mats for this beauty
Once I read, Digital has been discovered only and exclusively for church organ music. I tend to believe it. The Toccata and Fugue lends itself easily to misinterpretation. Having been used as the Big Dark Castle theme in every horror cartoon since 1925, its easy for it’s interpreters to take a bigger, faster, and louder approach to what could be so much more beautiful and restrained. Chorzempa’s interpretation is simply stunning, and possibly like no other version you’ve ever heard. He is able to bring emotion out of passages that you may not have even realized existed. He plays the opening motif in a way that is light, yet grand, and this seems to be his way of interpreting the whole of the piece. The most stunning passage is the second section, where he employs dream-like stop settings and creates a call-and-response interaction between soaring arpeggios. This is not a Toccata and Fugue based on fear and power, but on true yearning and emotion. Simply incredible.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Decca) Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 6 (Solti)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to Jean-Luc for another Mahler/Solti masterpiece
Georg Solti was a conductor who always strived for excellence. Sometimes, he did not achieve his objective. However, more often than not, he did. In this Mahler Symphony No. 6, recorded shortly after he took command as Music Director of the Chicago Symphony, he hit a home run. Solti was never one to wallow, unlike Celibidache or Knappertsbusch. In his younger years, he was given the moniker “the screaming skull.” He was renowned for his ability to tackle complicated scores and was a regular both in the opera house and the symphony hall.

Rare HD-Vinyl 24/96 (HRE) Flomental Halévy – La Juive – Live 1981

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Bob for this rarity
Halévy’s La Juive was once widely popular (it was Caruso’s last appearance in public, for example), but has more or less sunk like a stone in more recent years – yet there are, in fact, a couple recordings in the catalogue (I haven’t heard any of the alternatives, so I cannot really compare). The one under consideration sports a starry cast and does, in the end, make a good case for this at least intermittently engaging and interesting grand opera – engaging in the parts featuring the traditional French grand opera spectacular splendor, but in the end more notable for its lyrical parts and in particular the pacing and thematic and structural cohesion; even the grand scenes work more as parts of the greater structure than ends in themselves. It is also imaginatively scored, more so, perhaps, than the operas of his more feted contemporary Meyerbeer, and Halévy’s ability to create atmospheric and subtly distinctive scenes is admirable. On the other hand, Meyerbeer was clearly superior with regards to writing really memorable melodies – Halévy’s are pleasant enough but usually forgotten as soon as they have been presented.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Piano Sonatas KV 570 / KV 309 / KV 332 (Ingrid Haebler)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for this beautiful music
A fantastic pianist and the world’s greatest composer – Ingrid Haebler plays Mozart the way he should be played. (A great pianist is not necessarily a great Mozartian – Horowitz, with a few exceptions, did not really understand Mozart, and Gould’s playing of Mozart’s sonatas is simply too hideous to describe.) You won’t be disappointed with this one. Haebler’s recordings of this music have been neither the first nor the last I have heard, but they remain among the most penetrating and enjoyable I have heard. The music sounds perfectly natural under her hands, every note, every phrase, every chord, and every gradation of color serving the music. That she can play with such precision and make the music sound so spontaneous at the same time is one of the miracles of this record.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) Ludwig van Beethoven – Violin Sonatas Volumes 4 (Oistrakh/Oborin)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for this beautiful music
No one even came close to recording the Beethoven Sonatas as well as Oistrakh and Oborin, the two play as though they were one.
While one can argue that the tempos may stray from Beethoven’s markings, I dare you to try to find a recording more full of emotion and warmth and that is the most important element to me. Music means nothing if it has no feeling even if it is perfectly executed. The melodies soar like they should and Beethoven would have no choice but to smile if he heard these performances.
It may be true that some or even many of Oistrakh’s recordings do not sound unlike a performance in a tin can, that is simply not the case here.
