HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Giuseppe Verdi – Aida (Caballé, Domingo, Muti)

front-small-boxset All thanks for this beauty go to my generous donator from Lake Michigan area
Behind the pyramids and the elephants, the long lines of prisoners of war and of slaves carrying booty, the choral shouts of “Glory to Egypt,” and the splendid brass sounding the Triumphal March, Aida is the story of a love triangle: Aida, an Ethiopian princess who has become a slave in Egypt; Amneris, an Egyptian princess; and Radamès, the Egyptian general they both love (Aida secretly). There are ironies and conflicts: How can she love a man who is the enemy of her country, but who says he has fought and conquered for the sake of her love? It is suitable only for the biggest opera houses and therefore demands voices capable of great power as well as emotional expressiveness. Montserrat Caballé, Plácido Domingo, and Fiorenza Cossotto provide such voices, and Ricardo Muti conducts with a sense of drama and dynastic glory. –Joe McLellan

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Supraphon) Robert Schumann – Sonatas For Violin And Piano Op. 105, Op. 121 (Zenaty/Klansky)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Tovarnik for these little known virtuosi
Often I wonder, what it is that defines the magistry of an artist in the eyes of the music lovers. And the answer is often, that you need the right portion of luck, the well known “ambiente” as there are the label name, the country where you come from, the right person that you meet at the right moment…maybe something more. No doubt about it, what can NOT be: the artistry offered here by Ivan Zenaty and Ivan Klansky. Thea are worth more than only a listen.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (DGG) Gustav Mahler – Kindertotenlieder (Fischer-Dieskau)

front-small-boxset All thanks for these gems go to Jean-Luc
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is the most famous lieder singer of our age, and he recorded Mahler’s songs several times. However, as is so often the case with singers, the remakes are not always better than the first go-round. These performances of the Kindertotenlieder cycles from the peak of the great singer’s career, show him both at the height of his interpretive powers and in fine, youthful voice.

Something a little different. Hope you enjoy it!

The 1955-56 Gerry Mulligan Sextet was an outstanding ensemble on several levels. In Jon Eardley, Bob Brookmeyer and Zoot Sims, Mulligan found soloists with the same high degree of invention and melodic development that he possessed. The light buoyant swing of Peck Morrison and Dave Bailey without the weight of a chordal instrument was inspiring to the soloists and a joy for the listener. But the most compelling characteristic of this sextet was Mulligan’s ability to write brilliant arrangements for a small group that possessed the drive and intricacy of a big band.

HD-Vinyls (Mono)24/96 (EMI) Gustav Mahler – Kindertotenlieder (Ferrier)

front-small-boxsetAll thanks for these gems go to Tovarnik
Even before her tragic death at 41 (in 1953), Kathleen Ferrier became a legend for her incomparable voice, her simplicity and sincerity of expression, and her indomitable courage. This compilation of recordings originally made in the 1940s includes two beautifully sung Händel arias, two sacred songs by Maurice Greene, and delightful duets by Purcell and Mendelssohn (sung in English with another beloved English singer, Isobel Baillie), greatly enhanced by the inimitable pianist Gerald Moore. But the core of this recording is the Mahler cycle. Here, Ferrier’s voice takes on a new warmth and intensity; her deeply inward, direct expressiveness gives the bereaved parent’s grief and anguish a devastating impact. Her reading of the last song could be a bit more spooky, but the end is heartbreaking in its submissive resignation. The Vienna Philharmonic and Bruno Walter are in their native element. –Edith Eisler

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Erato) Granados – Goyescas/Escenas Romanticas (De Larrocha)

front-small-boxset All thanks for these gems go to Jean-Luc
Alicia De Larrocha playing Granados. They were made for each other. Simply stellar albums.
Granados composed some excellent music and some of the pieces in these suites really stand out. Alicia de Larrocha is one of those pianists whose mastery in certain repertoire is unparalleled, and mostly unchallenged. Even though her recordings of mozart, schumann, are always well poised and balanced, her mastery of the Spanish repertoire is such that her other acheivements stand small in comparison.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca/London) Gaetano Donizetti – Maria Stuarda (Sutherland/Pavarotti/Tourangeau)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks for this jewel to a generous friend from Lake Michigan area
This opera becomes a battle of the divas in its great second act, with Sutherland, as Mary Stuart, pitted against the jealous, paranoid, and vengeful Elizabeth I (Tourangeau). There is an intensely dramatic confrontation in which insults are violently exchanged between the powerful monarch and her imprisoned but still regal rival to the throne. Mary wins the battle of insults, but this is a dangerous victory over one who has the power of life and death. Elizabeth orders Mary’s execution and Act III becomes a spectacle of pathos and horror. Sutherland’s usual style is more attuned to pathos than to the swapping of insults, but she rises splendidly to the challenges of Act II and she has a splendid supporting cast.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Decca) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures From An Exhibition (CSO/Solti)

front-small-boxsetDon’t be surprised by the title…even myself, I always thought, it is “at” and not “from”…but the correct translation from Russian is “from”. Anyway, this is another outstanding performance of the “Pictures”, that I omissed to post all the time.
Now it’s time to knee down in front of Maestro Solti. One of the better full orchestral Pictures to be found! Full of passion and energy. Solti, the Chicago Symphony, and the London engineers bring out all the color and life in this great piece. The combination with a delightful performance of Le Tombeau de Couperin is a good match. Couldn’t be better! Highly recommended!
