HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Violin Concertos No. 1 & 4 (Grumiaux)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
These recordings were, for many years, considered to be among the best available. This is delightful old-style Mozart (meaning not period instrument) played beautifully and with character by the artists. Arthur Grumiaux’s aristocratic style really shines through here. He does not follow the more romantic style that seems to be very popular these days (check out Perlman and Mutter’s recordings) and instead presents the music as it is intended to be. Some people may be turned off by this approach to the music, though, for it makes the music sound somewhat less impressive and perhaps slightly more dry. Nevertheless, Mozart’s elegant melodies really sing via Grumiaux’s treatment of the music. This is pure “Grandezza”.

HD-Vinyls(Mono) 24/96 (RCA) Richard Strauss – Elektra (Highlights) (Inge Borkh, Fritz Reiner)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to Jean-Luc for the vinyl
Fritz Reiner’s fabled 1956 excerpts from Strauss’s Elektra not only live up to their legend via RCA’s superb “Living Stereo” remastering, but attest to the conductor’s unmatched synchronicity between his orchestra and, arguably, the most commanding, involved rendering of the title role and Orestes on disc. Inge Borkh’s powerful, laserlike timbre and intense vocal acting are beyond praise in the touching Recognition Scene.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Maurice Ravel – Piano Concerto In G Major / Piano Concerto In D Major For The Left Hand (François/Cluytens)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Rumpwagger for this beauty
Samson François (1924-1970) is considered one of the most important French pianists of the 20th century. His unique sense of improvisation, which is the trademark of his recordings, blossomed even more in concert. Those who had the chance to attend his concerts recall a very special experience.
Precisely why he’s is not better known in the United States (or known at all for that matter) is a mystery. On this album he plays Ravel with absolute mastery, refusing to prettify any of the jazz rhythms in the G major concerto, and by so doing, bringing out all of its toughness…..

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Hector Berlioz – Romeo Et Juliette (Colin Davis)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks Trottar for this rarity

After much searching for the Romeo et Juliette of my dreams, I ended up back here, with the very first recording of this piece I owned, along with much of the rest of the original Colin Davis Berlioz cycle. While other recordings have in my mind and ear superceded much of the Davis survey (excepting the colossal Les Troyens, and the Te Deum), this recording holds my attention just as it did 45 years ago. The London Symphony Orchestra was at a peak of performance and sound back in the late sixties, and here Davis has them in complete control. The choir is the estimable John Alldis Choir, and for me are the best of the best on this recording. The soloists are uniformly first class British singers from the era, and a special kudo to Robert Tear for sounding so French! In sum, there are other admirable recordings of this work, but for me this is the best, the definitive one.
