Quite possibly my new favorite version of “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Like all of the other fonè releases, sound quality is absolutely stunning.

Don’t miss this one!

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Decca) Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 8 – Solti

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Trottar for another gem
Mahler conducting has moved in a different direction from what we hear on this recording of the Seventh under Solti. Comparison with almost any other famous account — from Bernstein, Abbado, Boulez, or Tennstedt — reveals how extroverted and hyper-energized Solti is. The recording has been engineered for maximum detail, almost x-ray like, and any ambiguous or problematic aspects in the score are charged through, with forward momentum prevailing over anything else.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Eterna) Modest Mussorgsky – Pictures At An Exhibition/Night On Bald Mountain (Markevitch)

front-small-boxset
Igor Markevitch always had by this piece a very special affinity, having therefore an absolute domain of its whole significance; as a matter of fact, every time he conducted this hyper known work he added new, smart and significant details of expression, that enriched and ennobled still more the status of this composition. Markevitch directed this performance with dark poetry (The catacombs, and Baba Yaga), zealous and almost imperceptible accents carefully sculpted in the score.
This version to my mind must be included among the most pyramidal readings ever made. You will not find optimistic brightness, or radiant expressiveness, but a fervent Elegy in memory of Victor Hartman. So, please, take into account this memorable choice at the moment you demand a major and even most penetrating result.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Peter Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5 In E Minor (Muti)

front-small-boxset
Composed in 1888 the Fifth Symphony is generally considered to be the most attractive of Tchaikovsky’s major works. When he first began writing the symphony he was suffering from a deep depression. However, he moved to the countryside and his state of mind became much more relaxed, enjoying the peace and quiet, gaining a new-found pleasure from his garden. This E minor Symphony reflects all the violent and conflicting emotions that he was experiencing at the time of its composition.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG Archiv) Leopold Mozart – Bauernhochzeit – Musikalische Schlittenfahrt (Ensemble Eduard Melkus)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Lemarquis for this rarity
Period music performed as it was intended with a style not heard in modern music or in other performances of these works. In one word: fantastic!

Johann Georg Leopold Mozart was a German composer, conductor, teacher, and violinist. He is best known today as the father and teacher of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and for his violin textbook Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule (
Treatise on the Fundamental Principles of Violin Playing).

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Piano Concerti No. 9 & 17 (Serkin/Abbado)

front-small-boxset
This new WAM-Serkin-Abbado gem was provided by Jean-Luc
The best composer who ever lived and a superb team of pianist, conductor, and orchestra make this a solid gold winner.
Comparing Serkin with his earlier recordings of Mozart’s concertos, you might detect a bit more freedom or panache in the running passages of the first movement and a bit more light and shade in the cadenzas, and the sound is here more present and warmer. Serkin and Abbado don’t shirk or prettify them. There’s plenty of humor and really no reservations about the playing at all.
And a word about Abbado — this was before he started paying attention to historically informed performance, and it’s a full-blooded account worthy of Szell or Bohm, though in better sound. I’ve seen Abbado criticized for over-refinement, but there’s none of that here. The playing has weight, energy, and beauty — as vigorous old-style Mozart as you could wish for, and marvelously attentive to the soloist, as Abbado almost always was in his concerto recordings. Very good work all round!
