HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Piano Concerti No. 21 & 23 (Serkin/Abbado)

front-small-boxset
The best composer who ever lived and a superb team of pianist, conductor, and orchestra make this a solid gold winner.
Comparing Serkin with his earlier recordings of Mozart’s concertos, you might detect a bit more freedom or panache in the running passages of the first movement and a bit more light and shade in the cadenzas, and the sound is here more present and warmer. Serkin and Abbado don’t shirk or prettify them. There’s plenty of humor and really no reservations about the playing at all.
And a word about Abbado — this was before he started paying attention to historically informed performance, and it’s a full-blooded account worthy of Szell or Bohm, though in better sound. I’ve seen Abbado criticized for over-refinement, but there’s none of that here. The playing has weight, energy, and beauty — as vigorous old-style Mozart as you could wish for, and marvelously attentive to the soloist, as Abbado almost always was in his concerto recordings. Very good work all round!
