Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (BIS) Jean Sibelius – The Lemminkäinen Suite (Järvi)

front-small-boxset
Neeme Järvi’s recording of Sibelius’s Lemminkäinen Suite on BIS is one of the more satisfying accounts of this masterpiece in the catalogue. It comes across as structurally tighter than most, and does deliver a sense of inevitability to the music – no meandering here, and every note is taken to be an indispensable contribution to the whole. The end result is sometimes thrilling.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Archiv) Johann Sebastian Bach – Three Motets (Regensburger Domspatzen)

Many thanks to our friend Lemarquis for the sparrows
The Regensburger Domspatzen (Regensburg Cathedral Choir) is the official choir for the liturgical music at St Peter’s Cathedral in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. The choir consists of boys and young men only. The Domspatzen, literally “Cathedral Sparrows”, trace their origins back to the year 975 when bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg founded a cathedral school that – among other things – instructed boys to sing in the liturgy. The choir has seen various ups and downs during its more than 1,000-year history. In the 20th century, however, the Domspatzen became world-famous, especially through the achievement of the two directors who were to shape them over the course of 70 years: Theobald Schrems and Georg Ratzinger (brother of Pope Benedict XVI).

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Antonio Vivaldi – La Cetra – Raglan Baroque Players (Huggett/Kraemer)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
This is the 1st recording on baroque instruments of the twelve violin concertos. Vivaldi’s 12 concertos Opus 9 was his last set of published concertos. They were dedicated to the Emperor Charles VI, which indicates that Vivaldi thought they were excellent works as he probably saw Charles VI as a prospective employer. They are typical of Vivaldi with virtuosic outer movements and lyrical slow movements. The chamber organ replaces the usual harpsichord in the continuo, which softens the music and makes the added lute very effective in the slow movements. The playing by the under-rated Monica Huggett with the Raglan Baroque is excellent. Not only is Monica Huggett’s violin-playing a real revelation, the basso continuo is equally brilliant with, amongst other things, some marvellous theorbo accompaniments.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Eurodisc) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Piano Concerti 5,6,8,14 (Schmidt, Masur)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Trottar for another 1st class pianist
The outstanding East German pianist Annerose Schmidt recorded all the Mozart Piano Concerti with Kurt Masur in the early seventies. I’ve spent the last several days immersed in Annerose Schmidt’s Mozart and I’ve come to adore her approach to this music. She is direct, bold, virtuosic – if you like Geza Anda’s 1960’s Concerti you’ll like what Schmidt does here. This is Mozart playing with no mincing around, no pulling back, but still with something perhaps a bit feminine about them in a phrasing flexibility. What wonderful playing.
