HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI/Angel) Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy ‎- Elijah (Frühbeck De Burgos)

All thanks for this go to Bob
I love this beautifully performed version of Elijah. The pace was compelling with great balance between the admirable group of soloists and the outstanding chorus. I would strongly take issue with those who criticize Fischer Diskau whose performance was both lyrical and powerful. I am sure his accent is no worse than Mendelsson’s was!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral. Fischer-Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.
That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional “misfire” but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) Hector Berlioz – Requiem (Davis)

front-small-boxset
Another precious pearl in this chain called “Davis-Berlioz-Cycle”.
Any one not familiar with Berlioz’ “Te Deum” should also give this careful consideration. I personally prefer the Te Deum over the Requiem and wonder why the two works are not equally known. This Davis is pretty much a standard version and not to be slighted. Reportedly, there is another Davis performance made for L.S.O. Live which may not yet have been released. Anyone who catches onto this neglected masterpiece should also investigate the Inbal (on Denon) and the Shaw (on Telarc).

Pay attention: due to an unexpected error on the file B1, I uploaded a corrected B1. DL it and replace the old one.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Archiv) Antonio Vivaldi – L’Estro Armonico (Pinnock)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this box go to Jean-Luc
Since 1987 there has been a revolution in Vivaldi playing led by some notably wonderful Italian groups and soloists. Generally they have taken a dramatic, free-wheeling approach to Vivaldi and at markedly up-tempo speeds. The dynamic and emotional range and observation of accenting has become far more acute as a result.
BUT …………..
There is still no real substitute for this relatively plain and level-headed account played and recorded supremely well. If that sounds dull then the first paragraph above should be reassuring. This set oozes sheer musicianship at every level. The solo violin playing by Simon Standage, as always with this player, is a model of restrained display and sensitivity held in perfect balance. In the concertos for several violins at the end of this set, he is joined by colleagues of the same calibre.

Karl Richter’s performance makes the text real for me. If I’m going to spend 3.5 hours listening to the central message of Christianity then I want it done by people who at least give the impression of meaning what they sing. Karl Richter & Co. make me believe they believe what they sing by the reverence with which they convey the meaning of the text….

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Archiv) Johann Sebastian Bach – Johannes-Passion (Richter)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this masterwork go to Jean-Luc
In his day, Karl Richter was considered a Bach “specialist.” We accord that title nowadays, if at all, to purveyors of period performance practice–and rightly so. But there’s something to be gained by appreciating earlier conceptions of how this music should go. If you favor a more “traditional” approach to Bach’s sacred music, featuring a large chorus, modern instruments and “operatic”-style singers, then you can’t do better than Richter’s 1964 account of the St. John Passion.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (RCA) Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy ‎- Elijah (Ormandy)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this go to Bob
Premiered in Birmingham town hall in 1846, and a fixture of massed British choral societies ever since, Elijah is a prime culprit of George Bernard Shaw’s quip accusing Mendelssohn of “despicable oratorio-mongering”. But get a performance as fleet-footed and intelligent as this and all stodge and sanctimony are swept away. There is heft when it matters, in Yet Doth the Lord, and drama-charged recitatives from fulsome voiced soloists. But what’s more compelling is the nimbleness, the swift-moving parts. There are quick corners and shapely inner voices, subtle weft even in classic fat chorus numbers such as Blessed are the Men who Fear Him. Raspy period strings add God-fearing menace, the choir sound rich but luminous in detail.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 5 (Giulini)

front-small-boxset
I know, someone here will not agree completely with me, but for me this is
the best LvB’s 5th. In the first movement the DA DA DA DUUUM is in fact soft pedal-ed. Especially the second time it is played: It sounds more like “DAA DUU….DAA DUU”. WHICH IS AWESOME!!! Giulini is doing something DIFFERENT, something Wonderful, which would be stupid if it didn’t TOTALLY work with the way the rest of the first movement is presented. The longer I’m alive, the more I realize that the movements the great composers wrote are complete statements. Giulini makes it clear that the motif that everybody remembers is the least important part, or, actually not that, it’s all important, but that the last minute or so is THE STUFF.
Overall, this is just AMAZING. Criticisms of Giulini are often right on the mark. His Eroica with the same orchestra is almost ridiculous in it’s SLOW deliberateness . This performance is however not slow (except for the second movement, which is still wonderfully played), not soft-edged and not ponderous.
Best EVER transition between the 3rd and 4th movements and the BEST final few seconds.

Brenda Lucas and John Ogdon performed in 1971 one of the most splendid and idomatic versions of this introspective and amazing work of Messiaen. After years and decades of silence, at last this recording got out from the vaults. Lucas and Ogdon play it magnificently, making light of its difficulties of text and ensemble. Enjoy it. HD-Vinyl 24/96 (MFP) Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 3 (Walter)

All thanks for this go to our friend Lemarquis
Walter’s Eroica, recorded in January 1958 and his third studio recording after those he made in 1941 and 1949 with the New York Phil, is an excellent “traditional” reading. It may be exceptionable to call it that, because that kind of interpretive approach wasn’t dominant before World War II; it became more so after. Tempos are almost always on the slow side, a far cry not only from Beethoven’s controversially fast metronome marks but even from what the tempo indications at the beginning of the outer movements seem to suggest: “Allegro con brio” (1st movement), “Allegro molto” (finale).

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (MFP) Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphonies No. 1 & No. 2 (Walter)

All thanks for this go to our friend Lemarquis
Even Bruno Walter, who in old age was a softer conductor than anyone before or since, didn’t dare to swathe Haydn in romantic velvet. But Beethoven’s Sym. 1 and 2 gave him that opportunity. These cross-over works from the world of Haydn can be successfully played as heroic precursors (by Klemperer, Karajan and Bernstein, for example), but Walter strives to make them sunny and carefree, and his approach works.
In their way, these symphonies are the ideal introduction to Walter’s notions about Beethoven.

This is by far, the rarest and most expensive item I have ever shared here on boxset.

Test pressings are usually limited to 20-25 copies. They’re given to the artists/producers/etc to check things before doing a full press run – the very first copies produced. Occasionally, they will contain anomalies and end up being scrapped. More often than not, however, they are pristine with phenomenal sound. That is the case here.
