HD-Vinyl 24/192 (DGG) Martha Argerich & Claudio Abbado – Complete Concerto Recordings (6 x 180g Remastered Vinyls)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Urbanox for this stunning box
With this special edition DG pays tribute to an extraordinary musical partnership. The 6LP box set collects all the concerto recordings made by pianist Martha Argerich with conductor Claudio Abbado over more than 45 years. Their final meeting on stage took place at the Lucerne Festival at Easter 2013, where they performed two Mozart concertos. This special occasion was recorded, and the release was not only highly praised but is also Deutsche Grammophon’s most successful release of 2014 so far.
Martha Argerich and Claudio Abbado got to know each other through Friedrich Gulda, with whom they both studied in the late 1950s. Their close collaboration in the studio began in 1967 with Argerich’s brilliant concerto-debut release of the Prokofiev Third and Ravel G major. Each recording since then has been a success, as much with the critics as on a commercial level.

Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Liszt, Frederik Chopin, Ludwig van Beethoven, Maurice Ravel, Peter Tchaikowsky, Sergej Prokofiev

Orchestra: Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Mozart

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Piano Concertos KV 595 & KV 365 (Elena & Emil Gilels)

front-small-boxset
Thank you Jean-Luc for this great recordings
This is probably the best 27th I’ve heard, with the great Russian pianist Emil Gilels at the pinnacle of his career. Here (and in K 365) the Vienna Philharmonic, led brilliantly by Karl Böhm, provides rich, colorful, authoritative support. In K 365, Mozart’s Double Concerto, Elena Gilels, a very talented player in her own right, joins her father. A lovely, mood-shifting composition for 2 pianos–is a great way to accompain this magical 27th. These 1970s recordings were superbly engineered, and the digital transfers are warm and vibrant. There’s good balance between piano(s) and orchestra, and nice stereo separation of the two pianos.

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Decca) Leo Delibes – Lakmé (Sutherland/Bonynge)

front-small-boxsetRevisited, with the newest toys and in 24/192
Sutherland’s famed diction is much better in French than Italian. She is breath-taking as Lakme. What a vocal wonder! The bell song is “Inhuman”, it’s so awesome. Spectacular high E’s shot out the diva’s mouth like cannonballs, ravishing trills on high B. No one can trill like Sutherland, and she’s the only soprano in history who could trill on a high D-flat.

Composer: Leo Delibes
Performer: Emile Belcourt, Gwenyth Annear, Jane Berbie, Claude Cales, Joan Sutherland, Monica Sinclair, Alain Vanzo, Gabriel Bacquier, Joseph Clement
Orchestra: Monte Carlo National Opera Orchestra
Conductor: Richard Bonynge

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Philips) Joseph Haydn – Complete Piano Trios, Vol. 1 (Beaux Arts Trio)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this beauty go to Jean-Luc
The first and only recording made of the entire piano trios, performed by the legendary Beaux Arts Trio. Haydn’s piano trios deserve far more attention than they receive. As music lovers know, they are every bit as rewarding as his symphonies and string quartets, and also very numerous. They are not, however, true trios as we understand the term now. Essentially, Haydn took the sonata for violin and piano and added a cello part to strengthen the weak bass of contemporary pianos. This doesn’t inhibit the quality of the music in any way, but it has prevented modern piano trios from taking them up since the cellist usually wants something more exciting to do. All praise, then, to the Beaux Arts Trio for understanding that musical quality is more important than instrumental display. –David Hurwitz

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Columbia) Joseph Haydn – Symphonies 98 & 101 (Otto Klemperer)

front-small-boxset
All thanks for this beauty go to Jean-Luc
Otto Klemperer takes Haydn very seriously. While some might find his approach overly deliberate and lacking in vitality and humor, I find it profound. He recognizes Haydn as the great master whom we was. And the orchestral playing is perfectly balanced and extremely beautiful.
