In my younger years, about 20-25 years ago, I fell in love “only” with five women of the untouchable kind: Cecilia Bartoli, the Pekinel twins and the sisters Marie & Katia Labeque. When I first read of a guitar concerto by McLaughlin, at the time luckily boyfriend of Katia, I bought the CD without hearing, only because there were Katia playing on five piano/guitar duets. Finally I found the vinyl almost 2 years ago.

Give your ear and your heart to track No. 4 “Brise De Coeur” – is worth the whole album.

Some Impressions from Amazon:

Very impressive…beautiful and melodic, I am sure that this is by far one of the best pieces of music I have ever come across and recommend it to anyone interested in hearing flowing, fluid, passionate music.

This album deserved more promotion than it got. The slow second movement of the concerto is absolutely beautiful and evocative – certainly to the level of more famous concertos such as those by Rodrigo. Just the second movement of the concerto is worth the price of the cd. The piano/guitar duets are pretty moving as well. I highly recommend this album. John Mclaughlin deserves a lot of praise for his compositional skills on this one – as well as his fleet fingered guitar exploits.

Guitarist John McLaughlin performs with full orchestra in this recording of his vibrant, evocative “Mediterranean Concerto.” The piece is a stunning collage of moods and colour that defies classification. Is it jazz? Is it classical? It doesn’t matter. If you like sun and ocean and wine and garlic, you’ll like this music. It’s a great way to bring a little Mediterranean light into a drab northern winter.

A surprisingly powerful piece, combining Spanish classical guitar riffs with the power of an orchestra. Strongly recommended.
If you liked the melodic Mahavishnu orchestra works of Mclaughlins earlier work, you will love this. It’s very difficult to pigeonhole, crossing genres with ease. Peace and power.

  1. Thank you so much Alfredo, I feel broken hearted that HRM is down and hope it rises like a Fenix once again, we are very lucky we still have your wonderful rips to enjoy.

  2. Big fan of McLaughlin and of MTT here. The latter is doing some great things out in San Francisco. Thank you very much for this post!
