What a pity, what a robbery……i will nevernevernever forgive RCA that this grandious opera was never produced, but only this Highlights-record.

Super-Mario Del Monaco…..OMG, what a great and mighty Samson !!!!

There is another „Samson“ available, by label Myto, 2 CD, with Del Monaco/Stevens/Cleva, also from New York, but is not the same as this…it seems to be a live recording.

  1. Magnificent………..Thank You Very Much

  2. Regrettably the links are no NLA , thanks anyway .

  3. repost? repost?? how can i have missed this before? Now I’m going to get paranoid and go back through all your posts to make sure I’ve missed nothing else!

Anyway, suffice to say this shall be spinning on my digital turntable just as soon as I find a spare moment to give it my full attention — I STILL have not listened to the Baltsa Carmen! Too many reasons – excuses, excuses. I’m going to pour myself a glass and put it on right now.

I’ve never heard this opera, but oh boy am I excited to hear Mario as Samson. What part could be more fitting? And presumably expertly recorded too, and of course, magnicifently transferred from vinyl by St Rachmaninus. Now I just have to hunt down the libretti….

Rach, you make life worth living. May you be blessed with healthy old age and fertile children!

    • look at the datum of the archives….october 19, 2010.
I think at the time you didn’t know about the existence of boxset.ru :D

      • when I first discovered boxset i went back and queued up ALL your posts, so that’s why I was surprised I missed this one.

The Baltsa Carmen was excellent! Ricciarelli wasn’t as bad as I’d expected, but certainly not as good as joan in the reznik version which I’m more used to. Baltsa sounded like she was having a lot of fun, and Carreras – wow, what a voice! As I said, my first Carreras opera, but I’ll have to hunt out some more.

As ever, your work makes me happy. Hope you have a good weekend

      • By the way, I forgot to mention but I think the Carmen skips at least once. I was cooking while listening so couldn’t rewind, but I think it was somewhere around the “belle officier” bit. I will try to track it down when I can, but right now I’m…..oh sod it I’ll do it now.

        Ok, it’s side 4 – around 17:40
It’s only minor, so please don’t think this a complaint, I just know how your Germanic half likes these things perfect!

By the way, in my opinion, best “gypsy dance” scene I ever heard! I didn’t realise it was Karajan till after I finished listening and checked the cover. For what it’s worth (and because I’d like to hear more people commenting on what they think about these discs, rather than just saying thanks), the weakest part for me was Escamillo….but then I know nothing, as you know!

        • Thank you K. for the bug report…i will check it.

I have to admit, that i love over all others, the Decca/Resnik/Del Monaco edition, among my 4 Carmens…. i Have the other three only for offering the rips here, but when i like to hear the Carmen i hear only that one…maybe because of Super-Mario?

It is so obvious that I’m a fan of him?

          • I don’t know what it is about MDM, but every time I hear him I just get a big smile comes over my face. It’s just the hugeness of the voice. It’s kind of like when I hear Al Jolson, I just can’t help but smile.

Anyway, guess what, I was just sitting here thinking “you know, I don’t think I’ve got a Traviata from Rach”. So I come on here to check, and …oh boy… sutherland and pavarotti!!!! Who could ask for anything more? I can’t believe I missed that one too.

By the way, have you posted all the Mario you have? or are there more pearls to come?

            • Trust in me, my great brother; some people say, Callas was Violetta, because “she has read that letter” – i admit, someting greater you can hardly find in this world…..but – YES, BUT !!!! …….. you know, other fathers have also beautiful doughters, not only you – what i mean? A “VIOLETTA” like Dame Joan and an “ALFREDO” like Big P. – oh man, i swear you, you could kill all day long for hearing them live !

SuthPava is the best you can get…..have fun !!!

PS: pay attention to that (for me at the time unknown) Manuguerra, as father of Alfredo…simply great !

            • “By the way, have you posted all the Mario you have? or are there more pearls to come?”

I forgot to answer to this…. surely there is some record that i didn’t rip – i have to check all posts. I have many records with arias, sung by him and…..nice for you all other – there are some posts that were formerly on RS and, since i left RS 1 year ago, i come more and more to repost the remaining posts (about 80-90) on HF+FSo. Among them surely some Super-Marios :-) )

  4. What a pleasure to read your wise comments, brothers!
After your expert discussions it is a MUST to liesten this opera.. and to recheck all Racha’s posts
