Prokofieff, Stravinsky‎ – Lieutenant Kije, Song Of The Nightingale (1958) {Classic Records; 4LP, S-Sided, 180g, 45rpm, Remaster, Ltd; 24-96} + 16-44

Classic Records  presents two distinctly different Russian scores. Kijé is from the mainstream Prokofiev stable: folk tunes scored with great invention and combined with sections of sarcasm and wit. The Stravinsky tone poem, Song of the Nightingale, is music taken from his opera, The Nightingale. It is a score of great brilliance and demands the utmost virtuosity from every player. Here, under the watchful eye of Fritz Reiner, the Chicago Symphony delivers the goods. The score receives playing of both great delicacy and power. Kijé and Song of the Nightingale receive wonderful interpretations from Fritz Reiner, a conductor with more tricks up his sleeve than most. Special mention must be made of two particular orchestral contributions: Adolf Herseth’s trumpet playing in Kijé and Donald Peck’s fluting as the Nightingale are simply spectacular. It doesn’t get any better.

Cover
.This timeless gem is performed by L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, conducted by Ernest Ansermet.

This is a performance to be known as ‘one of the greats.’ The composition, Three-Cornered Hat was premiered by Ansermet, and with its lively rhythms, subtle narratives, dynamic development, and vivid contrast and tone-colors, this version is a masterly performance that none other appears able to exceed. The performance illustrates an ethnic taste that is rich in wild beauty in a truly vivid and dynamic way, while highlighting the lyricism of Falla’s music in a sophisticated, uncompromising manner. The solo singing by the young Berganza is also worth listening to.

Elgar, Vaugn Williams – Enigma Variatons, The Wasps, Greensleeves, Kansas City Symphony, Michael Stern (2013) {RR; Half-Speed Master 200g, 45RPM; HiRes} + Redbook

Cover
The universe is not exactly desperate for more recordings of this repertoire, but this one, surprising as it might seem, is pretty excellent. Michael Stern and his Kansas City Symphony take to the music as if to the manner born. The Wasps, here given as the complete suite and not just the overture, is delightful. Perhaps the only slight miscalculation in the entire performance is the overly swift March Past of the Kitchen Utensils, which loses some of its comic swagger at Stern’s tempo. Otherwise the overture and (especially) the Ballet and Final Tableau offer pure enjoyment from start to finish. The Fantasia on Greensleeves, un-killable in just about any circumstances, sounds just fine as well.
