Borodin, Rimski Korsakoff – Symphony No.2 In B Minor, Cappricio, Espagnole, Tsar Saltan (1959) {Analogue Productions; Remastered, Ltd, 200g; 24-96} + 16-44

R.I.P. SPEARO MY FRIEND, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!

This is a happy marriage between conductor and orchestra in the second symphony by Borodin. The orchestra was bristling with talent such as Gervase de Peyer on clarinet and Barry Tuckwell on horn and Hugh Maguire the leader of the London Symphony Orchestra until 59′ on Violin. The sound is very direct but the orchestra stands up very well to this. Martinon’s interpretation is refreshing and very up-beat.

Elgar, Vaugn Williams – Enigma Variatons, The Wasps, Greensleeves, Kansas City Symphony, Michael Stern (2013) {RR; Half-Speed Master 200g, 45RPM; HiRes} + Redbook

Cover

R.I.P. SPEARO MY FRIEND, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!

The universe is not exactly desperate for more recordings of this repertoire, but this one, surprising as it might seem, is pretty excellent. Michael Stern and his Kansas City Symphony take to the music as if to the manner born. The Wasps, here given as the complete suite and not just the overture, is delightful. Perhaps the only slight miscalculation in the entire performance is the overly swift March Past of the Kitchen Utensils, which loses some of its comic swagger at Stern’s tempo. Otherwise the overture and (especially) the Ballet and Final Tableau offer pure enjoyment from start to finish. The Fantasia on Greensleeves, un-killable in just about any circumstances, sounds just fine as well.

Prokofieff, Stravinsky‎ – Lieutenant Kije, Song Of The Nightingale (1958) {Classic Records; 4LP, S-Sided, 180g, 45rpm, Remaster, Ltd; 24-96} +16-44

R.I.P. SPEARO MY FRIEND, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!

Most older listeners agree that Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite was ideal repertoire for Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. With its big tunes, bright colors, bold harmonies, and unrelenting rhythms, Reiner and the Chicago — the pre-eminent Strauss performers in America at the time — excelled in Prokofiev’s Kiji. In this superb recording, Reiner and the Chicago are at the top of their form and their Kiji is witty, sassy, brave, ironic, and altogether hilarious.

Most older listeners, however, cannot agree that Stravinsky’s Song of the Nightingale was anything like the right repertoire for Reiner and the Chicago. With its spiky motifs, its primary colors, its hard harmonies, and its relentless rhythms, Reiner and the Chicago were seemingly out of their element. But although their approach is essentially Straussian, Reiner and the Chicago still excel at Stravinsky’s Nightingale. In this superb recordings, Reiner and the Chicago’s Nightingale is warm, lush, sweet, and even a little sexy, a sort of Salome à la Stravinsky. The complete recording sounds very direct emotionally grabbing and highly dynamic. This 4lp Remaster set is a of outstanding sonic quality and a Living Sterio landmark.

Moussorgsky ‎– A Night On Bare Mountain · Pictures At An Exhibition (2009) {Analogue Productions; 2Lp, 180g, 45rpm, Remastered; 24-96} + 16-44

R.I.P. SPEARO MY FRIEND, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!

Recorded at Kingsway Hall and engineered by Kenneth Wilkinson, this record couples Moussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition with Night On Bare Mountain. It has long been considered among the greatest sounding records ever made. Perhaps most stunning about Power of the Orchestra are the effortless dynamics, which have been reviewed and raved about ever since the first RCA shaded dog. From the teeny, tiny, itsy, bitsy gentle plucks of strings to the WHAM!! CRASH!! SLAM!! of a full orchestra without a bit of notice. It’s heart-stopping, jump-out-of-your-seat-type dynamics. The Power of the Orchestra – a more appropriate title there never was. But to hear it at 45 RPM…Oh! My! God! This thing’s got all the weight of an anchor but at the same time the clarity and airiness and sparkle of a feather. Nuance, a holographic soundstage, emotion to spare – this one’s got it all. A true reference. Power, indeed.

R.I.P. SPEARO MY FRIEND, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!

This timeless gem is performed by L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, conducted by Ernest Ansermet.

This is a performance to be known as ‘one of the greats.’ The composition, Three-Cornered Hat was premiered by Ansermet, and with its lively rhythms, subtle narratives, dynamic development, and vivid contrast and tone-colors, this version is a masterly performance that none other appears able to exceed. The performance illustrates an ethnic taste that is rich in wild beauty in a truly vivid and dynamic way, while highlighting the lyricism of Falla’s music in a sophisticated, uncompromising manner. The solo singing by the young Berganza is also worth listening to.
