This was another of those albums that looked clean, but was fairly noisy when actually listening to it. After considerable cleanup work, I’m happy to say that it gets TheNightOwl’s seal of approval. Nice warm MLP sound. Enjoy!

Track Listing:

Side One
Piano Concerto No. 4 In G Major, Opus 58 (cont.)
01 – I. Allegro Moderato
02 – II. Allegro Con Moto

Side Two
Piano Concerto No. 4 In G Major, Opus 58 (conc.)
03 – III. Rondo Vivace

Piano Sonata In E Major, Opus 14, No. 1
06 – I. Allegro
07 – II. Allegretto
08 – III. Rondo: Allegro Comodo

Harold Lawrence – musical director
Wilma Cozart – recording supervisor
Robert Eberenz – engineer
George Piros – mastering

Also pressed in mono as MG-50381

Note: The front cover says “Antal Dorati London Symphony” but Dorati is not in the credits. On the CD, which pairs Concerto No 4 with No 5, it lists Dorati as the conductor on No 4 and Skrowaczewski as the conductor on No 5.

Since the CD obviously came out decades after this album, I’m going to assume that the CD has the correct information and that the label on the album here is incorrect.

  1. Huge performances from musicians and ripper both !
This excellent Living Presence was worth the heavy cleaning work made. Congratulations Steve for this success and your devotion in giving a second youth to these old treasures.

Apart from that there is a puzzle about the conductor of this concerto : front cover says Dorati while back and labels say Skrowaczewski !! What is sure is that Bachauer recorded the 5th concerto with Skrowaczewski. The CD say Dorati for the 4th and Skrowaczewski for the 5th. Anyone has more informations ?

  2. I would like to express in my own language the enormous admiration and gratitude towards you, Steve and Jean Luc. I can not, so I only say: thank you.

  3. Who would know the condition the disc arrived in after hearing this excellent rip?!
This sounds wonderful, even in 24/96. I must hear the ‘fat’ version now…
Thanks to Jean-Luc for the disc and to you Steve for a fine piece of work for posterity (or as long as our collective hard drives last, at least) 😀

  4. Astounding… an impossibly rare original Mercury recording at a decent resolution. Can’t get any better, even if we don’t for sure who conducted it. Touche Sir(s)

  5. Thank you so much. I’ve been looking long time for the rare IPAM (international Piano Archives at Maryland) Bachauer CD Release. While I’m still trying to get that done, this couldn’t be a better off trade. Appreciated TheNIghtOwl, huge share from all points of view.
