All of Klemperer’s vaunted “Olympian” qualities were brought to bear in his phenomenal first recording of this work – regarded by many as the greatest of all symphonies – a reading as large-scaled and vital as the work itself. Majestic and powerful in the true classical sense, the listener becomes totally immersed in the compassion and affirmation of Beethoven’s vision.

This recording with Sir Thomas Beecham and the magnificent Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was one of the most successful early stereo productions. While Beecham conducted all nine of the Beethoven symphonies, he did not record them all. However, the Second is the one with which he was most closely associated. He recorded it on three different occasions, each regarded as the outstanding version of its time.

Ever since I started posting rips from the Franklin Mint collection, people have been asking me to post a complete FM cycle of the Beethoven symphonies. Right before I upgraded the cartridge and preamp, I ripped all nine of them, with the full intent of posting them. Well, one thing led to another and they never got posted. Time to do something about that…

These will be posted on an “as I have time” basis, but I should have them all up fairly soon. Starting with Symphony No. 1 (of course), I’ll be posting them one by one on the front page. Each time I post a new one, I’ll bump the post to the top of the home page. As you would probably expect, the recordings will vary in sound quality. Some will be stereo, some will be mono. But all of them are highly listenable in their own right.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted anything from the Franklin Mint collection, so I figured I might as well continue the recent “Peer Gynt-o-rama” (thanks to AlKat for coining that phrase!) with this performance.

This was by request. Hope you enjoy it.

All three works presented here are products of composers who were either pianists of outstanding ability, or who had a close affiliation with the instrument in youth. While Schumann himself was not a pianist, he combined criticism with composition, and in both, he expressed such personality and individuality that writers and composers have been challenged to equal the results for more than a hundred years.
