Reviews from the Acoustic Sounds website:

Great performance and presentation
“I purchased this last summer and have had two sit-downs with the entire set. Such a pleasant experience both times! The quality of both the performances and the sound reproduction are stellar. If you enjoy falling under the unique spell that Ravel casts this record will do the trick. I must echo the previous reviewer’s opinion that the tactile and visual presentations are also very fine. As far as getting your money’s worth this is about as good of a package as one can hope for, really. No frills, straight-ahead quality. 5 stars in every respect.”

Fantastic Ravel Box Set
“This box set is not to be missed. Although most of this music has been covered by RCA and Decca/London with conductors such as Reiner, Munch and Monteux, no other conductor has done a complete cycle of Ravel’s music to such a high standard on LP.

The music and the sound will stun you. This set even with the most familiar music will make you take notice. For instance on side 2 of Daphnis et Chloé the sound and the melodies will sound totally new to the listener as the interpretation is to such a high standard that it possibly cannot be matched. And that is only the beginning!

Stunning sound, wonderful performances of great music. One of the very best reissues ever and not to be missed. A set that you will cherish and play more than once. Do not miss this important set.

Outstanding Reissue
“If you like Ravel, or more generally, if you just like good orchestral music, I don’t think you can go wrong with the Testament reissue of Ravel’s complete orchestral works, featuring Andre Cluytens conducting the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra. The performances are all outstanding and compare favorably with the best (e.g., Munch’s Daphnis et Chloe, Reiner’s Alborada del Gracioso, etc.).

I was literally floored by the sound. Ravel is one of those composers whose music is truly complemented by great sound and boy does Testament do a wonderful job. The records all display great depth, width, and dynamic range and are beautifully pressed on quiet vinyl. I don’t recall ever reading a review of this Testament reissue, which surprises me, in view of its excellence.

Given that the original EMI/Columbia SAX pressings are hard to find and quite pricey for examples in good condition (I’ve looked!), this Testament reissue is a tremendous success, both musically and economically.”

  1. Thanks for this Nightowl, 5 minutes into listening to Daphnis et Chloe and it sounds fantastic. Coupled to Cluytens fine interpretation this set is a real winner.

  2. Excellent – looking forward to this one, although the girl on the cover with the octopus on her head seems to have her right hand on the wrong way round!
Good job it has nothing to do with the music 🙂

Your work is immaculately clear and magnifies Cluytens’ artistry of Ravel’s works.

I salute your work and I’m glad you are a contributer to “Whatever” can be eminently proud of his team!

Thank you for this beautiful labor of yours.

    • Hello NightOwl
Firstly thank you for this and all the other rips.
I downloaded the 8 parts and the two fixes. Usually when I start extracting the 1st part it runs through and stitches all eight. However a checksum error appears for part 3 and 4. I have downloaded the fixes but how do i run them? Should I delete the original part 3 and part 4 and then run from part 1? It does not allow me to run winrar due to the errors as I would normally. Thanks.

      • FF or FP?

My suggestion would be to redownload the files you’re having problems with (this is the first problem to be reported). If you got them from FF originally, try grabbing them from FP instead.

You could also try using the recovery files with WinRAR.

Either way, UnRAR all 8 files (starting with part 1) and then replace track 14.

If you still have problems (or not), let me know.

  4. Hi:
Thanks for these wonderful recordings The sound is much better than the bargin EMI CD Box Set. Unfortunately, Track 2 will not play beyond 22:30 (Daphnis et Chloe – Side 2) It plays fine in the 1644, but not in the 2496. I’ve downloaded through both FileFactory & FilePost & still the problem exists. Hopefully it can be fixed. Thank you again for your fine uploads.

  5. Ive joined the party late, but thank you so much for these files. I borrowed the original box when it first appeared (yes I’m that old) but by the time I tried to buy it the deletion axe had fallen. This is so much better than the CDs. One of the joys is that this is the sound of the Conservatoire orchestra before it was disbanded, and is a sound now lost, since successive conductors of the Orchestre de Paris have been intent on internationalizing it.

  6. Steve: Thanks a lot this is gorgeous! Lovely music with great sound. This is something really nice. I applaud your hard work and great choices. We are getting too spoiled by all of you and our lives are very blessed! Thanks!
