Still the best way to collect Lehár’s fantastic music

This is a 13-CD boxed set of 7 of Franz Lehár’s operettas, and let me tell you, frivolous music it is not. Two of the operettas, The Merry Widow and The Count of Luxembourg, are typical happy operetta plots with expertly crafted orchestral music and vocal lines that demonstrate a masterly understanding of the human voice. The others extend those qualities to stories with bitter endings that strike at the heart almost as well as a far more dramatic work. The composer’s style matures audibly, growing more bittersweet as time goes on. If you love the Merry Widow and want to find more, believe me: there is plenty more to discover here, even if nothing will replace that perfect gem of an operetta.

A quick note about this 2004 release: The 95 page booklet includes a biography of Lehár, background information of the 7 operetta, and detailed synopses. Alas, this means there is no libretto, which can be a bummer considering the inclusion of dialog in most of the recordings, but I’m happy to overlook this omission for the exquisite music-making that spans these 13 CDs – speaking of which, this could have easily been a 10 CD set if the contents had been spread a bit more compactly. But this is EMI we’re talking about. It is what it is.

Five stars for including 7 operettas in one box! Now what a set of 7 more?

I can’t yet review the quality of the CDs as this is a Christmas present and cannot be opened before then.

I am a Lehar enthusiast and it is wonderful to find 7 Lehar operettas in one set, which is why I purchased this item. What I want now is to find another box set with another 7 and so on until I have them all. But I can guess – any other box set will be from some other organisation and will be sure to include the two most popular – Merry Widow and Land of Smiles and most likely others I already have in this set with just one or two being “different”. Perhaps box sets don’t sell so well? Perhaps that isn’t surprising if they are so limited to the “most popular” shows, duplicating all over the place?

It is time for some co-ordination when it comes to boxed sets. Why not just issue the whole lot in several boxes for a change? Recordings appear to exist of all or nearly all of Lehar’s operattas so what are the producers of DVDs waiting for? Do they really think a box set will only sell if it contains Merry Widow which isn’t my favourite even though it’s very good? Can it be people won’t buy boxed sets if they contain the operetta it’s most likely everyone already has, the one that introduced them to Lehar and made them buy that one right away? It’s expensive buying whole opererettas etc, but highlights disks aren’t good enough, just make you long for the whole thing.

Since this is the only box set I’ve seen of Lehar after checking on 3 Amazon sites – UK, USA and Austria, the latter where you’d expect them to really put themselves out for Lehar (!), it’s worth buying. If the recordings are as good as the deal, this should be 5 stars all round. I shall find out in about a month’s time.

Finally – why aren’t these shows and others like, eg Novello, Kalman, Suppe, produced more in the UK? Do producers think all we want is edgy and often highly unattractive modern stuff? It’s good when one goes to Germany, Austria or France to find a wider repertoire of beautiful older music and older shows – wonderful escapism and makes one feel they are more cultured, and I feel more inclined to go to the theatre which there is more of an occasion.
