What a great TURANDOT this production could have become…if only there were another princess in front of the microphones…
Sorry, signora Ricciarelli, not bad, but there are better Turandots…

Enjoy the delicious and beautiful Barbara Hendricks, the old but always becoming better and better Ruggiero Raimondi and a Domingo in marvellous shape.
All this under the dramatic and secure directing hand of maestro von Karajan.

Is it possible to have a great Turandot recording without a great Turandot? This recording almost convinces you that’s the case. Whatever one makes of this fairy tale about a Chinese princess who beheads failed suitors, the score is among Puccini’s most sophisticated and forward looking, and never has that been more apparent in Herbert von Karajan’s interpretation. The opera unfolds in a magical blanket of orchestral sound (sumptuously rendered by Deutsche Grammophon’s engineers), full of details even the most seasoned Turandot admirers might’ve missed. Plácido Domingo as Calef and Barbara Hendricks as Liu are ideal casting. But Karajan’s tendency to cast light voices got the best of him: lyric soprano Katia Ricciarelli isn’t commanding enough on any level to be considered adequate in the title role.

  1. Bravo, I always wanted this as lossless, and I also like your comments a lot! As for Katia…. Karajan chose her, I think he knew more than me (because I too find her unsuitable…)

  2. Clarity and beauty par excellence.
To put this in perspective, Madame Ricciarelli is no Birgit Nilsson, for example. And I like Domingo here, but he’s no Del Monaco or Corelli.

    That’s my 2 cents worth.

Thanks so much for your painstaking labors, Rach.

    • Just 1 more cent’s worth:
I have complete recordings of 10 different tenors from 1937 to present time. MDM and Corelli tower over the others, but Bjoerling, Pavarotti and Carreras are very good. Martinelli (1937) and Merli (1938) are too old sound to get a fair hearing.
      Just an after thought.

  3. I am not a fan of Karajan in most works, but his Sibelius and Puccini are especially fantastic. Like his conducting style was made for works like these. Thank you very much.

    • I cannot do anything to help you. Only this: be sure, the exe is not from me, as I work on a mac.
