For long years this recording of Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain has been among my top favourites both for the playing of the soloist and for the orchestral support of the orchestra under Ataulfo Argenta, who had, alas, died before the recording was originally released in 1959. The ‘Aranjuez’ Guitar Concerto by Rodrigo is still at now one of the best recordings you can find around.

  1. I have to confess I’ve never been a big Yepes fan. Can’t quite put my finger on the reason why. I wouldn’t say anything remotely like Fabio Zanon’s rather caustic commentary that Yepes shouldn’t have committed any of his playing to recordings, but his sound doesn’t quite work for me. However, the praise you give this album will definitely warrant it a good long listening session with an open mind. I’m grateful for the chance of having my opinion changed on the matter.

    Thank you for your post!

  2. Hearing “Arenjuez” for example, on a solo guitar is not like hearing an entire orchestra, or even the recording I have of Jose Carreras singing it – his mood & temperament in vocal production is fabulous on this. I keep an icon of it on my desk top for a quick listen now and then. I love the song!
As far as guitar players, I’m no connisseur of them. When I get past Andres Segovia or Christopher Parkening, I’m lost.
So from my humle platform I enjoyed this album immensely.
A full hearted “thank you,” Rach.

    • You probably must have heard it as well, but in case you haven’ t, I would definitely recommend checking out Miles Davis’ version of the Adagio in Sketches of Spain – even though Rodrigo himself hated it.

  3. This is a very interesting record – Falla’s Gardens sound wonderfuly and Soriano/Argenta make this recording a serious venture. Yepes’ interpretation of the Aranjuez Concerto is something that I have to get used to, his fingers just feel somewhat “stiff”, but the result is surprisingly pleasant. More listening is required :-). The sound is excellent, thanks to the master Rach. Thank you!

  4. Just FYI – I think this was released once on CD as Columbia WD 71675. That doesn’t list performance dates, but has the same artists, tracks, and timings.
