HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy – Songs Without Words (Barenboim)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this beautiful box
These wonderfully musical performances of Mendelssohn’s “Songs without Words” by Daniel Barenboim display a pianism of highest order, the noble restraint of which reminds me of the artistry of Artur Rubinstein. Barenboim makes the instrument sing most beautifully and plays some of the most taxing scores with stunning dexterity and fluency. The 70s’ stereo recording has very realistic and full sound quality.

Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words are superior Victorian drawing-room works, salonesque, but with much beautiful melodic material and enough variation in colors and moods to sustain the listener’s attention throughout (although I don’t recommend listening to all of them in one go). They are not masterpieces, at least not uniformly so, but delightful, charming works. And it is certainly good to have them complete in performances as thoroughly compelling as these. Barenboim’s playing is bold, resourceful and flowing, refusing to let the music dissolve into pastel shades, and he takes care to emphasize the singing lines.

That approach can, admittedly, lead to some pieces sounding a little rushed and hard, but for the most part the poetry and feeling of these readings are eminently enjoyable – he is a tad better in the slower and more reflective numbers throughout, however. In short, there is nothing complacent or staid about these versions, although there is certainly beauty and sensitivity here, and that is indeed very refreshing. In other words, these are readings that might actually convince those who are inclined to view these pieces as somewhat empty charmers that there are genuine musical rewards. Barenboim also includes the Gondellied and some minor, charming chips from the composer’s workbench in the form of six innocuous pieces for children, the Albumblatt and two Klavierstücke.

Though I get more familiar with Berman’s version, this is another great rendition of this set.
There is another outstanding performance – by Ginette Doyen on Westminster – but it is so rare!

I think the title “HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy – Songs Without Words (Barenboim, Fischer-Dieskau)” is a bit misleading though : Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau has only participated in the liner notes.

    • Yeah….I first thought He would sing in some songs, but then I realized: “What has singing with songs-without-words to do? And changed everything in the description, in the titles, but forgetting the main title.
      OK, corrected now.

  8. Very enjoyable, Rach.
Thanks for the steady flow of rich sounds.
