HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Frederik Chopin – Piano Concerto No. 1 (Askenase)

The playing of Stefan Askenase (1896-1985) was a marvel of tender poetry, subtle rubato, and lucid clarity. If your models for piano playing are the cool efficiency of Pollini or the theatrical thunder of Horowitz, you may find Askenase’s manner too polite and small-scale. But if you prefer delicate shimmer and sparkle to empty glitter, and if you are seeking lyric grace of enormous subtlety, then Askenase is a must-hear.

Ripping Infos

If You hear some clicks and pops here and there, Who cares?
Id rather have a few light anomalies instead of destroying the music.
Enjoy the music, not the ticks & pops.
I tend more and more, in the last time, to de-click with an automatic setting between 0.7 and 1.2 so you can say, my rips are like half rough rips.

  • Software: iZotope RX 4 Advanced, Adobe Audition CS 5.5, Twisted Wave 1.9
  • Very light de-clicking with iZotope, significant clicks manually removing, no de-noising
  • DR-Analisys before converting to Flac
  • Converting Wave -> Flac: Twisted Wave 1.9
  • Artwork: Sony Alpha 350, Epson Perfection V750 Pro, Photoshop CS 5.5

  1. Thanks for this! I was just discussing him with a friend the other day and saying that his reading of the Krakowiak is the best ever recorded. I used to own this LP years and years ago and it has gone a long time ago. I thought I might never hear it again.

  2. Thank you very much for another gem in collection of performances of this masterpiece: Francois, Vasary, Pollini, Arrau! And now Askenase who is one of the greatest Chopin’s interpreters of the 20th century!
They say, the more quietly you play Chopin, the more effective he is! Well, Stefan Askenase is a perfect performer, then. There is no one who compares to him nowadays.

  3. Alf, thans for this famous LP.I own all LPs of Ashkenase because
I admire him since I was a schoolboy. Fantastic sound quality,
much better than mine. Greetings. Trottar

  4. never knew about van Otterloo recordings for DG. like him conducting the Residentie-Orkest den Haag, and their recording of Schubert 5th seems (of course, PHILIPS) to be of incredible merits for me. my favourite rendition. i’ve heard the woodwinds in Schubert 5th as they never played before…
unfortunately stolen from my collection, alas.

this record could be of real interest even for Chopn-haters.

    thanks a lot, Alfredo!

  5. Did not know this rendition before, but the review says it all. Way more “musicality” than some of the more “shiny and artistic” famous renditions out there. For everyone who prefers the not-so-theatrical…

    Thanks, padrone.

    • Caro Fabio, è tutto a posto. FF ha cambiato leggermente la visuale della homepage l’altro ieri ed è per questo, forse, che il tuo JDL non riconosce i links. Ricarica e riprova.

      • Hello Rachmaninov, still not possible. I get this message since one week: “Server Load Too High
The server hosting this file is temporarily overloaded. You can download this file immediately by upgrading to FileFactory Premium. Alternatively, you can try again shortly. ”

      • Yes. Maybe this is just the sound of Vinyl? Whenever they get loud I can hear a soft clipping and some odd upper harmonics pop out on midrange notes.

        • This can be. You shouldn’t hear with phones. I will never understand why people are this cruel with themself. Hearing through phones is a pain in the ass. You have vinyl transfers, not CD or digital files. Hearing with speakers makes possible, that you “don’t hear” minimum 50% of all annoying issues that you hear through phones.

But it can be that the vinyl is already worn. Check some other rips of the same era to be sure.

  6. This won’t download now…none of the files completes. Great performances. I had it when you originally posted, but I had to swap out a drive and it got lost!! Big loss!
