HD-Vinyl 24/96 (FSM) Ludwig van Beethoven – All Piano Sonatas (Brendel)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this marvellous set
Brendel is rightly considered an expert on Beethoven (Schubert and Mozart), because unlike many other “high-class” pianists who play only on speed, Brendel gives the listener the opportunity to enjoy Beethoven. Very clear and emotional, as one would expect for a romantic composers.

Is the Sonata a more intimate medium than the string quartet? Sometimes I wonder if yes… sometimes I believe it. I think that is because here only three people are in dialogue: The composer, the performer and the listener. Only one person is “interposed” between the thoughts of the composer, and me, the listener, namely the interpreter. And in my almost 50 years ‘career’ as a classical listener I have heard many other performers that are approached with variable approaches to Beethoven sonatas.

And now Brendel … Certainly Alfred Brendel’s Beethoven has scores intimately studied – like all other of his colleagues – but with him, I feel that he is able to establish a special link and then transmitted by his piano playing. He is the extended arm of the composer, he thinks the idea of Beethoven, plays Beethoven’s verve and also, where appropriate, with its softness.

For me, spheres are opened up by these recordings in which you can drift and revel as listener. I never felt the connection to Beethoven’s music more intimately, his thoughts were never clearly over me, as in these recordings. Only the Schubert recordings of Alfred Brendel are (perhaps) better than his Beethoven. And so I look forward one by one time, if I may dive into the Trinity, the third link in the chain composer-performer-listener.

Danke, Herr Brendel!

23 thoughts on “HD-Vinyl 24/96 (FSM) Ludwig van Beethoven – All Piano Sonatas (Brendel)

  1. Totally agree with the review here. For me, Brendel is special!
If I may add, there is a 4th arm to this Trinity. That is: the Alchemist who provides such superb transfers from vinyl.
    aka Alf 😀

Thanks for this monumental work and to Jean-Luc for yet another treasure.

  2. Alfredo,
23 Links of the finest sound and glorious Beethoven. Brendel is meticulously expressive and accomplished in this genre.
The length of time to download all 23 made me desire more to hear all the work you had done.

As Shakespeare said so eloquently, “the only answer I can make is thanks, and thanks, and ever thanks.!”
Your work is monumental as a promoter of the greats in music!

    • My noble friend..I must confess of a big big sin: in my youth I didn’t give a dime for Brendel….I don’t know why…I was a little ignorant and too-much-fallen-in-love with the common famous names of the 70s, 80s…..I was too blind and deaf to recognize the real genius of Brendel…..and at least I should have given him more chances due to the homonymy that follows Brendel and me. Later (somewhen in the 90s) I started really to “study” and appreciate more and more artists that I always knew by name but didn’r really appreciate. This was my 2nd birth as an estimator of classical music/operatics and real fine performers/orchestras/maestri….

      • Yes, sir, I understand.
One of the first principles in epistemology is to get the facts and comprehend them. That is what you are describing.
        It’s part of growing!
Knowledge of artists and technology has been a great bounty for us. Thanks for the fruit of your growth.

  3. I thank you again for such a wonderful collection. I’ve long loved Alfred Brendel’s playing and it’s great to have him playing so much great Beethoven.

I’m having an odd issue though. The “repaired” file plays fine on my preferred flac player, VLC. But every other file I’ve checked crashes VLC every time I run it. Every other FLAC file I have runs fine on VLC.

Is this happening to other people? Is there a simple solution? I’ll be using a different player for the time being but I’d hate to have to drop VLC since it plays all other FLAC files.

Please understand that I’m thankful for your wonderful audio files, and I’m not suggesting you’ve done anything wrong. I just want to have these files play on VLC and would love suggestions..

    Thanks again

      • No, really I’m not joking. Just reporting what happened with my VLC player v2.2.4. I’ve tried both 32-bit and 64 bit player and uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times. BTW, the files play fine in other players.

I tried many of the files and they all crashed VLC at loading–the player window never really even opened up–there was just a crash report. Every file I tried crashed except the repaired file.

At any rate, if it’s happening to no one else then I presume I have a local problem that complicates VLC playback of some FLACs. I’ve tried sorting it out and maybe I’ll have some luck, since past versions of VLC have had a difficulty with some FLAC files.

I really do thank you for all the material you put up, I was just checking if anyone had a similar problem that could help me sort out the issue on my PC.

        Thank you again.

        • I really don’t know, what the problem could be, on your side. I also use to playback with VLC, my files and all other files I have from all over the web….never a problem. And since my “normal” and the “fixed” files are done all the same way, you shouldn’t have any problems. Very strange! Sorry that I cannot help you.
