HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Melodyia) Sergei Prokofiev – The Jester (Rozhdestvensky)

All thanks for this masterwork go to Jean-Luc

Receiving a commission from the Ballets Russes impresario extraordinaire Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929) Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) began work on the score of “Chout” in Italy in 1915. It had been decided to write the ballet based upon a Russian folk tale. Based in Paris since 1909 the Ballets Russes had achieved a formidable reputation for innovation and the superior quality of it’s productions. Two humorous tales of the Perm province had been discovered in the Russian tales collection of A. Afanasiev. These made up the basis for the ballet libretto. The long awaited premier of “Chout” opened the Ballets Russes season on May 17, 1921 in the…..

The long awaited premier of “Chout” opened the Ballets Russes season on May 17, 1921 in the Paris “Theatre de la Gaite-Lyrique”, the facade still existing today though the interior has been completely gutted and modernized. This first performance in Paris was fairly well received though one later in London was savaged by the audience and critics alike. Russian Conductor Gennadi Rozhdestvensky was born in Moscow in 1931. Educated at the Central Music School and the Moscow Conservatoire he conducted Bolshoi performances for over thirty years. In 1982 Rozhdestvensky was appointed chief conductor of the then founded USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra. This recording on the Russian label Melodiya made in 1985, at just under sixty minutes is the first of the entire ballet made from the revised score, said to have been liked by Stravinsky and obviously approved by Diaghilev. The ballet’s story is ridiculous and brutal. Some would say this music fits the story quite well. It is at times atonal, heavy with percussion and not melodic in the normal ballet idiom. The technical quality of this recording is just fine. It should be understood that Diaghilev, Stravinsky and Prokofiev had been working together for several years by this time. The ballet has been presented in Russia only once in 1928. Prokofiev’s many and varied compositions range from the traditional, the Classical Symphony, to the modern, but, always exhibit his imagination. During his studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory he had become known as an arrogant and a rebellious composer of brashly modernist music. This performance of this piece demonstrates his compositional imagination resulting from his special abilities.

  1. methinks, ‘The Gambler’ is the most interesting and intriguing Prokofiev’s opera.
i own 3 LPs subscription box with its recording done by almost the same forces under the baton of the same Rozhdestvensky, but… alas… with the cutout in the principal scene in the gambling house. just after Alexei begun to play and making his first win till the phrase “Он невменяем” [He is insane] between the edge of the 5th and 6th sides the most dramatic and innovative passages of the opera are cut away…
maybe the earlier releases or the foreign ones are free from this stupid cutout.
