Arthur Fielder was not a great conductor, who created new interpretations of music. But who cares! His work was enjoyable and it brought important music to a broader audience. Not a bas contribution!

Offenbach’s overture to “La Belle Helene”? The piece begins as a crisp pace Most engaging. The piece develops nicely. A nice piece of Offenbachiana. “Tales of Hoffman”? There are several pieces from this work. The shimmering music is typical of Offenbach, engaging. “La Perichole”? Lively, to say the least. This piece gets the toes a tapping! More elegiac parts ensue. Well played.

    Any suggestions?

  2. Although Fiedler was not a great conductor by critics’ standards, he was a coductor who reached people and popularized classical music. I am biased because the very first “classical record” I listened to and purchased when I was 12 years old was Boston Tea Party – RCA LS 2213. Arthur Fiedler introduced and instilled a passion in me for the “classics” which has lasted a lifetime.

    • It’s a shame to hear that assessment of Fiedler. His Liszt Les Preludes, Gershwin Concerto in F (with Earl Wild) are the very finest performances of those pieces. He was a much better maestro than given credit. His showmanship just hid it.

  3. Thank you.

I just discovered your work, and I think it’s not the last time I’m thanking you, because it feels like entering a whole world of wonders.
