HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Sony) Jonas Kaufmann – Nessun Dorma! – The Puccini Album

front-small-boxset
For those of us who deeply admire the artistry of tenor Jonas Kaufmann for his Wagner roles and his recitals of lieder this recording comes with a bit of trepidation. Will this intensely musical artist make the Puccini roles as convincing as he has those of other composers or will he plunge and lurch into the Italianate style of belting we so often encounter in the opera house?

Rest assured. Kaufmann is first and foremost a tenor with a magnificently beautiful voice matched by some of the most intensely musical phrasing and arching of lines that rise seamlessly to the heights of emotion and intensity. His first romantic encounter was with La Traviata in 2006 in the US and he was praised at that time for his compleat performance. Though some naysayers will state that according to their ears, instead of throaty tone lower in the range, Kaufmann could bring to every note the same Italianate ping that distinguishes his upper extension.

All well and good. But even for those who fear these arias may not offer the dignity of what Kaufmann usually sings, listen carefully and see how he brings a new standard of artistry to the warhorses as well as the less well known arias included on this recording. Kaufmann has called this album ‘the “real” Puccini album which I recorded with Antonio Pappano in Rome. It exclusively contains arias and scenes from Puccini’s operas including highlights from “Manon Lescaut,” “La Bohème,” “Tosca,” “La Fanciulla del West”, ”Le Villi,” “Edgar,” ‘La Rondine,” ‘Gianni Schicchi,” “Madama Butterfly” and “Turandot.” The sensitive conductor is Antonio Pappano and his renowned orchestra and choir of the Accademia Nazionale Di Santa Cecilia.

  1. “…will he plunge and lurch into the Italianate style of belting…” too funny, man! 😀

  2. Alf,
I like his voice, and it is a big one. But for me he’s not a Puccini stylist.
But I’d rather be with this recording than to be without it.
    Thank you.

    • Bob, I saw him twice, from the MET (in our local cinema, via direct stream)
He’s a great one, he can sing Puccini, what many of the greatest always tried and could not perform as well as Jonas can.
Believe me, he’s a belcantist, but I “hear” in his voice, that he’s born for verismo.

  3. Thank you very much
