HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Supraphon) Antonin Dvorak – Rusalka (Neumann)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to Jean-Luc for this stunning beauty
I gather that this work is revered in Czeck republic. Dvorak’s early attempts at opera were poor, as he felt constrained to produce rather Wagnerian works, which ultimately came to be silly. When he returned to his folky inclinations, and Symphonic sensibilities, this was the result. Gabriela Benackova as Rusalka is in splendid voice here and Vera Soukupova sounds delightfully Slavonic as Jezibaba, the Witch. The music is amazing, even the libretto is moving…and the “Moon” aria by Rusalka (track A5) is among the most beautiful arias in operatics.

Have you ever heard an aria you loved, and bought the complete opera only to be disappointed? Don’t worry; that won’t be the case with “Rusalka.” It’s full of wonderful melodies, bouncy Slavonic rhythms & gorgeous orchestration, plus a beautiful, magical story and unique characters. This recording has many superb performers and the Czech Philharmonic & Chorus led by Vaclav Neumann are very fine. The two star singers are Gabriela Benackova (exquisite voice!) in the title role and Richard Novak as her Water-sprite father. Both are perfectly cast and convey a huge range & depth of emotion. Tenor Wieslaw Ochman has a pleasant voice and Vera Soukupova as Jezibaba makes a very convincing witch. The rest of the cast, especially the villainous Foreign Princess, handle their roles very well. The digital recorded sound is clear and atmospheric. Be advised — the dynamic range is huge — if you adjust your volume to the soft opening of the prelude, the fortissimo climax may raise your roof a little. One more interesting aspect of this opera: Dvorak was a great admirer of Wagner and his “leit-motives.” “Rusalka” has its own underlying system of subtle musical themes that bring out shades of meaning and characterization. But the music itself is 100% full-blooded Dvorak.

  1. One of my most beloved operas. I’ve listened to Fleming in 3 different performances but nothing beats an 100% Czech(oslovakian) recording with an all-Czech cast (I think the great tenor is Polish, like today’s top interpreter of the role, Mariusz Kwiecien)
    Thank you so much!

  2. Dear Rach
Thanks for this opera which I love… By the way Wagner’s influence is still there (and really obvious in some parts of the opera).

    • In a way or in another, everyone has been influenced by another, times before himself. When I was a young man, sometime I had difficulties to guess if some passages of a certain opera were by Rossini, Donizetti or the young Verdi.
