This has long been one of my favourite performances of “Pictures”. The sound quality from the 60s recording is very good indeed. I find the pacing to be just right for this extraordinary work. I have listened to a number of versions over the years, including more recent recordings – including the Sinopoli version on DG, and a London Symphony version, as well as a few others that I have forgotten – none of them made my spine tingle like this one has.

Of course, Reiner’s “Pics” are from another planet…

It is interesting that the Austrian Karajan and his German Berlin Phil. Orch. was so competent in the French and Russian repertoire. In all Karajan’s programing of more “serious” and more Teutonic works by Beethoven, Brahms ect.; it is ironic that Ravel’s “Bolero” is Karajan at his best-this rendition is very intense and at once very passionate. Likewise, Mussorgsky/Ravel’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” is also very vivid and sonorous.

“Pictures at an Exhibition” was one of my first introductions to “Classical” music when I was a child. It is an outstanding work, that captures the mysterious and very Russian essence of Mussorgsky; but also displays Ravel’s orchestral mastery and French sensibility.

  1. When I extract the DVD, the file VTS_03_1.vob fails to extract according to a “CRC” error in “part2” of the archives. I’ve downloaded THAT part 3 times till now, on the assumption that the download failed at some point or something, but I still got the same error. Could you please check the archives on your end and make sure that the problem isn’t in the archives themselves?!
And thank you for the Vinyl, great quality recording. Merry Christmas. 🙂

    1. sorry for inconveniences…uploading while the web is busy is a pain in the ass and such things happen often.
Anyway, I made new archives…DL all them again.

  2. Dear Rach, can you look at (part 6) of video? If what is states needs waiting, I’ll wait…( though waiting since spring). Thanks for everything you do!

    1. My dear, I don’t have the files anymore on my mac and also not the program, what I used to make the archives. But I still have the DVD…only I need to find again a good program to use for making new archives….this will take some days/weeks

      1. Thank you very much Rach for responding! I did not mean to disturb you that much, really. …only if you find time… I do understand how busy you are doing so much for US! Thanks again and accept my deep respect! Health and peace!

  3. @Rachmaninov, I have some LP’s that I haven’t seen on your blog and they could use some polishing. Some of them are in mint condition. Do you think I could record them and send you the raw medium so that it can be cleaned and published for downloading?

By the way, how do you take the ideal cover shot with your camera? is there a specific Technic?

    1. Friend, how do you think, we should handle this “thing” Do you want me to polish your rips, load on my servers and post them for you? If you think of a donation per rip, we could speak about…

      1. Absolutely! polish my rips, load them on your servers and post them for everyone else too. In fact, do you think it would be easier of I send you my vinyls so that you may do your thing with your own equipment?

How much are we talking about per-rip?
