HD-Vinyl Mono 24/96 (Philips) Shostakovich/Ravel – Piano Concertos (Bernstein)

Don’t be surprised by the not-as-good-as-normally quality of the sound – this is a Columbia recording from 1959. Philips, sonically ways superior than CBS, was here only the distributor.
When you hear to the 2nd mov. of Shostakovich’s concerto, don’t forget to breath…that beautiful it is.

The Second Piano Concerto of Dmitri Shostakovich has always been a favorite of mine — grand, thoughtful and full of play — and it gets a wonderful performance on this disc with Leonard Bernstein directing the New York Philharmonic as well as serving as soloist. I don’t know that I’ve particularly listened to any other recording of it because after my first hearing of this one I have had no desire to stray.

    1. hey Joe (eh, famosa…)
Prova, se ti capita, le Jazz suite…sono fantastiche, ma apparentemente impossibili da trovare in vinile

  1. You are right Rachmaninov: it is a very beautiful melody; I think the right term is lyric (!)
and I did remember to breath, although unconsciously I tilted my head to the right – a sure sign that I was deeply moved by the music 🙂
    thank you Rachmaninov
    be well

    1. I do the same…my head hangs a little rightward…is an attempt to hear better, even with your stronger ear – the left ear……

      You are a left-handed, like I am 😉

  2. Thank you so much for your effort, this looks like a gem! I can’t wait to hear Bernstein conducting it, I wonder if he will give it a slight american/jazzy touch

  3. I’m in the process of downloading. Thanks. Last year I’ve heard Shostakovich’s 2nd piano concerto in Alexander Kobrin’s performance with Michail Jurowski conducting Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra. Very romantic reading and I like it that way.

  4. I grabbed this for the Ravel concerto, but I gained equal enjoyment from the Shostakovich. (however that’s spelled) I had not knowingly heard anything from Shostakovich and now I shall be lending my ear to more of his works. I’ve been listening to this album all week! I quite enjoy it. Many thanks to you. Long live Rachmaninov!
