Wilhelm Kempff was one of the great German pianists of the postwar period, and his two sets of Beethoven sonatas remain a standard by which all others are measured. He was not a flashy artist, nor was he grimly severe. Rather, he practiced a sort of natural eloquence of expression that made his Beethoven one of the most satisfying over the long haul. Individual moments may rarely leap out and grab you, but his performances leave a satisfying impression of completeness, as if no stone has been left unturned. These performances have been highly regarded since the early 1960s, and with good reason. They offer an admirable picture of Kempff as an artist, and the accompaniments are quite fine.

These are magnificient recordings of Beethoven’s great piano concertos that sound as though they were recorded yesterday thanks to Deutsche Grammophon’s state of the art mastering. Kempff’s splendid playing borders on the miraculous; his warm, compassionate performances are livelier than many others I’ve heard.

Leitner and the Berlin Philharmonic are enthusiastic accompanists to Kempff’s playing.

  1. RACH:

Your choices as to the best renditions always astounds. Finally the legendary Kempff Beethoven cycle has emerged and so to you goes my gratitude as always. Might we hear p.c. 1 – 4 recordings @ 24/192 someday? The thought of that is wondrous.

      1. My mistake. Yup i forgot about 2+4. As per my note on that page i can’t finish downloading them. Tried for weeks.

        Oh my… can’t wait for 1+3.

btw I only have download problems with Kempff… weird.

  2. Grazie mille per questo interessante cofanetto. Molto belle le foto, tra l’altro. Una domanda: si tratta della stessa registrazione – con i BPO e Leitner – di cui ci hai già fornito i concerti 2, 4 e 5, vero?

  3. Dear Rach…if I wanted the rips of just one pressing of the Kempff Beethoven concertos, which ones should I be downloading in terms of SQ please?

    1. My desert-island-Beethoven-Piano-Concerto is for sure the number 5…but (un)fortunately you must DL all them togheter…you can’t DL only the one you want 😉

    1. OK…they are great and each one, per se, in its own way unique and precious…I have many other concerti by minimum5-6 other pianists/conductors, but only 4 complete sets…it is everytime a pleasure to discover well known things offered in many different ways by many different artists. You cannot say, which one is the best.
Is it up to you to decide. Hear them all and let your heart take the choice. All 3 sets are worth it.
