What a marvelous production of Beethoven’s brilliance, Pollini’s manual dexterity and DGG’s excellent sound engineering.

This is truly a great boxset which proves that good sound and great technique can be old and need not be new. Whatever effort the listener exerts in listening to this music will be rewarded many times over in euphonious glory.

The collaboration helps immensely. After the death of Karl Böhm, who had conducted the concerti #s 3-5 with Pollini, Eugen Jochum recorded #s 1 and 2 with Pollini. I believe that Böhm was most successful in #4 (now coupled separately with the Jochum #2) and that his #s 3 and 5 required more brio than he could supply. While Böhm was a great conductor, Jochum was even greater. He collaborates here more than he accompanies, providing symphonic weight, nuance and energy, just as he did for Milstein in the Brahms concerto, Argerich in the Mozart 18th, Monique Haas in the Schumann, and Larrocha in the Brahms #2. I dislike only his much lauded Brahms concerto #1 with Emil Gilels- too slow and heavy I think.
Also here and in #2, Pollini sounds more inspired, playing with more joy and vivacity in the outer movements and more intense feeling in the Largo. Try also the second theme in the third movement.

There’s an amazing chemistry between Pollini and Böhm. Whether it is in this Beethoven’s 5th or in his 3rd or 4th piano concerto or in Mozart’s 23rd and 19th. This is music making of the greatest order. A sincere WOW!

  1. Dear Alf, another surprise with the Pollini Box. I thought i have nearly all recordings including many Radio transmissions, but after checking the archiv, I Have not the Böhm Version of No. 4 and 5.But of course the complete cycle Pollini made with Abbado from 1992 on. Its interesting to have the difference in sound and in Tempi. Total different recording team
with Abbado , Böhm and Jochum. Thank you again
    Trottar

  2. I have tried a dozen times but there is something odd with #7. All the other files downloded very fast except 7. Only about 10 % of file size download then stop every time.

    1. This is an issue by FF…there is nothing I can make. You can avoid this kind of problems by buying a premium account. Think about…is not expensive and you get for free tons of music with max speed.

  3. Thanks for this box, I’ve heard 3 and 4 previously and am looking forward to hearing the other three concertos. A very appealing mix with Pollini working with two distinguished maestros in Böhm and Jochum.

  4. I’m having trouble with this one, too.; Win Zip is reporting a problem (without being specific) so only the first movement of concerto No. 1 actually downloads. I deleted everything and tried again, same results.

  5. Divine! I love these recordings which are on DG Beethoven edition. The first recordings of B’s piano concerti I listened to and fell in love with the instrument itself.

  6. Many thanks for your incredibly hard work and devotion. You are an asset to the world! Incidentally, I have the same problem as JJP. All but #7 download fine. (I have a premium membership). Could be FF’s fault but maybe a reupload would help.

  7. Already listened to concerti 1, 2 and 3 (in this order) : these are real breathtaking performances! Pollini’s piano is beautifully recorded, and his playing captures your attention from the first second of the first movement of #1. One of my most orgasmic experiences ever 😉
    So… thanks, Rachmaninov!

  8. Hi Rach,
I keep getting “incorrect password” when unrar gets to Part 02. Can you please check?
Thanks a million…Your postings are awesome…Thanks for the many priceless gems you share.

    1. be sure…the PW is correct…I always use the same PW. Maybe you shouldn’t copy and paste it, but typing it. If PW would be incorrect, so it would be for hundreds of posts, almost 1000 if I count also the posts of my other blog.
      😉
