What a marvelous production of Beethoven’s brilliance, Pollini’s manual dexterity and DGG’s excellent sound engineering.

This is truly a great boxset which proves that good sound and great technique can be old and need not be new. Whatever effort the listener exerts in listening to this music will be rewarded many times over in euphonious glory.
The collaboration helps immensely. After the death of Karl Böhm, who had conducted the concerti #s 3-5 with Pollini, Eugen Jochum recorded #s 1 and 2 with Pollini. I believe that Böhm was most successful in #4 (now coupled separately with the Jochum #2) and that his #s 3 and 5 required more brio than he could supply. While Böhm was a great conductor, Jochum was even greater. He collaborates here more than he accompanies, providing symphonic weight, nuance and energy, just as he did for Milstein in the Brahms concerto, Argerich in the Mozart 18th, Monique Haas in the Schumann, and Larrocha in the Brahms #2. I dislike only his much lauded Brahms concerto #1 with Emil Gilels- too slow and heavy I think.
Also here and in #2, Pollini sounds more inspired, playing with more joy and vivacity in the outer movements and more intense feeling in the Largo. Try also the second theme in the third movement.
There’s an amazing chemistry between Pollini and Böhm. Whether it is in this Beethoven’s 5th or in his 3rd or 4th piano concerto or in Mozart’s 23rd and 19th. This is music making of the greatest order. A sincere WOW!
