For me, this record is the best version of Peter and the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals. Loriot tells in his humorous style hides the two stories perfectly, without departing from the origin. Through music, people and animals are alive. This is a real treat for kids and adults too of course.

Of course is this work by Prokofiev originally intended to introduce children to classical music and, perhaps even enthusiastic to develope understanding for the sonic possibilities and the construction of the orchestral apparatus. In the same time it is easily accessible and easy music stuff and a nice story.

Well, you don’t have to say too much about Loriot: a great artist, quiet, modest, without mallet and calmly, always subtly elegant. And he speaks to all equally positive, old, young , intellectual and suburban casanovas, I do not know anybody who did not like him. Such artists have always been rare and are becoming increasingly rare.

Here gives Vicco von Bülow this – probably every music listener at least partially – known piece very own joke, a unique preserves the atmosphere and probably this is the version with which you can captivate children the most. But the reference is naturally receptive to adult decca SXL -2218 with the LSO, conducted by Skitch Henderson and Beatrice Lillie as a great teller ( in English). Anyway: the Loriot version is a “must have”!

Oh yes : as with other recordings of this work , there’s the carnival of the animals as a kind of bonus to it.

  1. I always looking for recording that can compete with the decca recording. I have the decca one that has the speech, which it some times annoyes me. I hope this version is a good recording and music-only so I can enjoy.

  2. Thank you Rachmaninov.
But, and this is a big BUT, and in the words of an extraordinary man “I’m seriously considering to leave this blog”. Why? Because there is too much to download and to listen. You can’t imagine the amount of work I have! and I want to add the following: I do not like opera. (would you please drop the knife!?) I enjoy some of the vocal music, and that is my limit!

keep it real keep it sound and clear!

  3. Dear Rach
yes, all right. But I have to thank you also for another reason.
Since we agreed to rip the Lps of Beethoven sonatas played by Arrau, has awakened in me an interest in this beloved pianist. While waiting for each new Lp I listened to all his performances in my possession (on Cds and Dvds), I read two books about him, I visited via Google his American residences in Forest Hills (Queens, New York City) where he lived from 1941 to 1946, Douglaston (Queens, New York City), where he lived from 1946 to 1991 , and Andover (Vermont) where he spent the summer holidays.
In particular, I found it very interesting to read the book by Joseph Horowitz “Conversations with Arrau”. In addition to his biography, the book introduced his piano technique and its interpretation of the great composers of the past, all in the context of international pianism of the twentieth century.
If you are interested I can scan the book by J. Horowitz (in Italian) and send it to you in Word format.
For now I close here. I ask you only this: if you can get you, through some friend, the Laser Disk with the Piano Concerto no. 5 of Beethoven, recorded in London on November 3, 1988 by Arrau with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis, and you could then rip it, would be great for our community. On Youtube you can find the video of that concerto that I had recorded from satellite TV in 2000 (the video artifacts are due to interference in the reception of the signal due to a storm), a friend of mine had converted to avi and someone else made him go around the world.

    Waiting Arrau.
