HD-Vinyls Stereo 24/96 (DGG) Debussy/Ravel – Piano Music For 4 Hands (Aloys & Alfons Kontarsky)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Trottar for this rarity
Fabulous music, fabulous recording, fabulous performance. The Kontarsky brothers were strong technicians, intuitive partners, and had a great feel for Impressionistic music. The recorded sound is also superb.

The Kontarsky brothers were among the finest duo-pianist teams of their day, performing from the 1950’s through 1983, when Aloys suffered a debilitating stroke. They were champions of modern music, premiering works from Stockhausen, Berio, and Zimmerman among others, and made a number of fine records for Deutsche Grammophon over the course of their careers. The present disc, recorded in 1973 and 1977, is representative of their best work and includes Debussy’s “En blanc et noir,” “L’Enfant prodigue” and “Prelude a l’apres d’un faune” as well as Ravel’s “Ma Mere l’Oyle” and “Rapsodie espagnole.” The Debussy and Ravel recordings are of the highest caliber, and were considered reference recordings for many years. The Stravinsky too is superb.

These recordings were originally released decades ago, but to my mind have never been surpassed in terms of sheer “joie de vivre”. The pianos are relatively close-miked, and I get the impression that the performers are performing for me in a living-room (albeit a living room large enough for two concert-grand pianos). There are very occasionally spots of ensemble “looseness”, but there is none of the sterility that comes from too many edits. Certain tempos are modified (for instance, “Lindaraja” is performed faster than is typical to positive effect), but always towards greater continuity of the music. When you listen, you know that these performers love this music, and have the wherewithal to express it.

Ripping Infos

If You hear some clicks and pops here and there, Who cares?
Id rather have a few light anomalies instead of destroying the music.
Enjoy the music, not the ticks & pops.
I tend more and more, in the last time, to de-click with an automatic setting between 0.7 and 1.2 so you can say, my rips are like half rough rips.

  • Software: iZotope RX 4 Advanced, Adobe Audition CS 5.5, Twisted Wave 1.9
  • Very light de-clicking with iZotope, significant clicks manually removing, no de-noising
  • DR-Analisys before converting to Flac
  • Converting Wave -> Flac: Twisted Wave 1.9
  • Artwork: Sony Alpha 350, Epson Perfection V750 Pro, Photoshop CS 5.5
