Nobody steals the spotlight when Maria Callas is onstage, but Tito Gobbi never lets us forget that this show is called Rigoletto, not Gilda. Neither singer has one of the century’s prettiest voices; both have dramatic presence, impact, and subtlety–based as much on their control of verbal nuance as on musicianship–that make their characters three-dimensional, the story meaningful, the emotions real, varied, and intense. His role is bigger and more complex than hers is. He is almost constantly onstage, and his music runs the whole gamut from fatherly tenderness, to regret at a life gone wrong, to explosive rage. Sparks fly when they sing together, and Tullio Serafin conducts with an exemplary grasp of the opera and a detailed knowledge of his cast’s capabilities. –Joe McLellan

This has GOT to be the perfect cast for Rigoletto. Callas, Di Stefano, and Gobbi all in their wonderful primes. La Divina sounds so young, fresh, and innocent here. I have usually found Callas’ diction quite exceptional, unlike Dame Joan, and that is once again evident on this recording. Her coloratura soaring tones sound efortless here! And Gobbi!! What incredible voice he is in here!! I agree with our friend from Milano when he states that Gobbi has to be second only to Ruffo for Italian baritones. Di Stefano had to be the perfect voice for the Duke (along with Nicolai Gedda, the late Alfredo Kraus, and Mario Lanza, even though we were never fortunate enough for Lanza to perform the entire role). It must have been this type of voice Verdi had in mind when he wrote the Duke of Mantua. Di Stefano shows a neccessary abandon and rakeishness that so many other Tenors lack on recordings. This recording has a real Italian edge to it. Not plastic and pristine sounding like most modern recordings of this role. Serafin’s conducting is flawless!!!! Quite possibly one of the greatest recordings of all time. A must have!!!

  1. Sir Rachmaninov:

I thank you very much for this new Hi Def Callas Rigoletto. Years ago I bout the vinyls of the recording, and hav looked for it since on blogs. Now this! Bravo.

Callas’ high note ending on the 1st Act Duet with Gobbi is phenomenal.
    Thanks again.

P.S. what is the real purpose of the image assembleyment above? Do we really need one more hoop to jump through?

  2. Hi Rachmaninov:

    Two thoughts;
    1. my memory has slipped in 75 years. I listened to the entire Rigoletto and the Callas high note was not to be found on the first 4 discs; So I do no know to what I was referring.

    2. In an effort to prevent automatic filling, you should perform a task displayed below. Assemble the image as you see in the upper right corner.

    Very gratefully yours,

  3. Dear Mr. Rachmaninov,

after downloading triple (I wanted to be shure that isn’t my mistake) I get all the time only a loud white noise on all 5 tracks. What’s the matter, where is the mistake? Please help!
Greatings from old Gemany to beloved Russia

      • Dear Mr. Rachmaninov,
so I can see – You’r really polyglott! In which language You prefare to communicate? My English is probably poor, my German on the highest level, my Russian on a normal one, other languages like baby’s, a bit Latin . So – my mother language:

        • Hi Doc….no problem, which language we use; important is the fact, that we understand each other as well as possible. My mother languages are german and italian, I can good enough english, russian only on a Tarzan-level with help of google :mgreen:

          • Dear Mr. Rachmaninov,
You’re right – what all of us unite is the most universal language: Music = harmonies, rythm and notes, from which point of earth we ever!

Bin gespannt! Danke!

  4. All I can say is WOW!!!!! this is SO much better than the rather poor EMI efforts the last few years. However I understand Warner is redoing the complete Callas studio work from the original tapes (not older CDs like the EMI stuff). That hopefully will sound fabulous. Thanks a hundred times for your great work jay

  5. I hope this post is acceptable.
