Audiophile (TAS listed) HD-Vinyl 96/24 (EMI) Bizet/Shchedrin – The Carmen Ballet

Reposted, new rip and FF links
Audiophile reissue by Alto on 180g vinyl. Although you know the Carmen-Suite by memory, you will feel like hearing it for the first time, due to Shchedrin’s fine and a little different orchestration. Outstanding and enduring, still delights and surprises me. Shchedrin’s arrangement is wonderful. If I had a time machine I would go back to that opening night With Maya Plisetskaya and the Bolshoi Ballet to experience this masterpiece.

When the Soviet Union had plenty of money to pour into their USSR Symphony Orchestra, they send the Bolshoi Ballet and the ballerina Maya Plisatskaya on a world tour expounding the glories of the Soviet State. I might be wrong on this, because even this ballet material may have been too “hot” for the sensitive (and censorious) Soviet Union to handle at that time. Believe me, it is a masterwork of the composer Rodion Shchedrin’s genius. He wrote it as a ballet piece for his wife, yes, Maya Plisatskaya.

The most fantastic part of this music is the percussion battery that Shchedrin employs and for which he writes music. This one particular recording, from those late ’60s/early ’70s years is truly worth hearing for the percussionists alone. They are truly remarkable and the strings which Shchedrin employs are fantastic, also. The orchestra is almost paired down to a strong chamber orchestra. Shchedrin only orchestrates Bizet’s vision for strings and percussion in this interpretation of Bizet’s perhaps greatest work, but it is a mighty effect as only the genius of Shchedrin is able to demonstrate. Shchedrin is the Rimsky-Korsakov of the twentieth (and now twenty-first) century!

This music by one of Russia’s greatest living composers made quite an impression on a young man almost forty years ago, and the music and feelings I remember stay with me to this very day.

Ripping Infos

If You hear some clicks and pops here and there, Who cares?
Id rather have a few light anomalies instead of destroying the music. Enjoy the music, not the ticks & pops.
I tend more and more, in the last time, to de-click with an automatic setting between 1.0 and 1.2 so you can say, my rips are like half rough rips.

  • Software: iZotope RX Advanced v2.02, Adobe Audition CS 5.5, Twisted Wave 1.9
  • Very light de-clicking with iZotope, significant clicks manually removing, no de-noising
  • DR-Analisys before converting to Flac
  • Converting Wave -> Flac: Twisted Wave 1.9
  • Artwork: Sony Alpha 350, Epson Perfection V750 Pro, Photoshop CS 5.5

  1. Thank you, I was looking for this very one. 😀

As for the “ByGijS” guy, I think the ‘idiot’ term applies better than ‘mafioso’. After all, Xavier Cugat always said that he never had to sign a contract when dealing with ‘mafiosi’, a handshake was more than enough. So, one could expect respect, professionalism,… from them, not this case. In AvaxHome, on the posts top right there is a sort of desk bell (you know, ‘Grand Hotel’, la Garbo walking through the hall, reception desk, clink clink…) if you click on it opens a window to report to the moderator. I think if we all start to report all those posts where the so-called “ByGijS” uses your uploading work and besides displays your equipment as if his own, the site moderator will end doing something even if it’s just to stop the bothersome reporting. Really, some people must lead very sad lives to have to steal some other people stuff just to get some “thank yous” in a site or a few coins from a premium use. 🙄

    • of course, i’ve tried that lounge-bell, but it didn’t work…..guess why? It seems that AH is like a restricted society, a private society (honored society=cosa nostra?) 🙂

      • What a dirty trick. Anyway, if you read A.J. Quinnell’s ‘Man on Fire’ you will remember the main character managed to sweep aside a whole ‘familia’ so, no matter where they hide, we’ll end catching them. 😎 Did you try contacting this way: ? It is to report copyright infrigment and stuff like that but at least it displays an email address where to write to… another matter will be then if it works, if they read the emails and so on so forth.

  2. Hi Rachmaninov,
I am most grateful for this sonic delight; had it once on vinyl, so thanks to you we have now reunited. You are making wonders you know.

A bunch of greetings from Sweden

  3. I am having trouble connecting to the server to download the
Carmen Ballet by George Bizet/Rodion Shchedrin. As I am new to this site can I download only on days a selection is featured? I have been looking for this ballet in a digital format for several years, and you are the first place I have found it.
The actual error I get is ‘this page cannot be displayed’ which could be most anything. Any advice?

    • The reason is that the files are not longer on Hotfile. I reup them on Filefactory. You will see, when it is done, by finding the post on the main page, today or tomorrow.

  4. Thank you so much Mr. Rach!
Col suo permesso, a cue for the new rip:

  5. Dear Alfredo, thank you very much!
I’ve never heard anything from Shchedrin, but he is a real genius from my native country – Russia!
His arrangement for percussive instruments is the best masterpiece in the genre!
If you have a chance, please, also listen to Georgy Svirdov (his orchestral music) – he is another great Russian composer, however, his recordins were most likely issued only by Melodia, which pressing quality was often leaving much to be desired.

  6. Thanks to Shchedrin, Rozhdestvensky, EMI and Alto for this wonderful percussion and strings version of Bizet’s Carmen. And the excellent rip by Rachmaninov. Bravo!

  7. Hi,

According to FileServe, the first file is not available.

Could you please reupload it? I had the vinyl back in the days (in Cuba!!!) and I’ve been looking for this since then!

    Thank you very much!
