High-End HD-Vinyl 192/24 (Analogue Productions 200g) Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov – Scheherazade (Reiner)

Brand new vinyl, played here for the 1st time
Ladies and Gentlemen, here is the mother of all „Scheherazade“ recordings. At today, for more than half a century, no other production was able to beat Maestro Reiner and his Chicago Symphony Orchestra: good speed, real dramatical atmosphere, perfect tempo and a magnificent sound. This Analogue Productions Reissue on 200g is the best sounding version I ever heard.

After 54 (!) years there is nothing new under the sun, the masters of recording productions from the golden age – 50s and 60s – knew how to do it:

Listen to this and believe it: the recording was made in 1960. One of the most expensive vinyl records by RCA LIVING STEREO, if in near mint condition and early pressing.

“…The second movement is just ravishing in the beauty of the Chicago’s playing and Reiner’s romantic approach; there is some staccato triple-tonguing done by trumpeter Adolph Herseth in the fourth movement that should leave you, if not him, breathless. But let is just be said that, after you hear this, no other Scheherazade will ever replace it in your affections.”
HP’s The Golden Dozen LPs – Harry Pearson, The Absolute Sound, June/July 2007

Led with grand authority by Fritz Reiner, the Chicago’s brass and wind section play gloriously throughout, and the final movement of Scheherazade (we learn from the original producer [1960] in an accompanying essay) was recorded in one take–an almost unheard-of feat. This fast movement is taken at breakneck speed, with no loss of clarity or power, with the strings in the hands of magicians.

Ripping Infos

If You hear some clicks and pops here and there, Who cares?
Id rather have a few light anomalies instead of destroying the music. Enjoy the music, not the ticks & pops.
I tend more and more, in the last time, to de-click with an automatic setting between 1.0 and 1.2 so you can say, my rips are like half rough rips.

  • Software: iZotope RX 3 Advanced v3.01, Adobe Audition CS 5.5, Twisted Wave 1.9
  • Very light de-clicking with iZotope, significant clicks manually removing, no de-noising
  • DR-Analisys before converting to Flac
  • Converting Wave -> Flac: Twisted Wave 1.9
  • Artwork: Sony Alpha 350, Epson Perfection V750 Pro, Photoshop CS 5.5

    1. does it happens, that you have a very good HiFi equipment? Otherwise you wouldn’t hear the difference. This rip is to the CD like a Ferrari to a BWM7 – both are cars, but no more.

      1. Thanks Rachmaninov. Yes, when listening to the CD version I feel that sounds “ok” but that’s like if I were losing something. 😉

My equipment are in the middle, not hi-end, but with well made records I do listening improvements. I have a Pioneer A70 with built-in DAC and a SACD player also Pioneer.

But now, I’m testing something different. I am converting 24/192 files into DSD files with Korg Audiogate. The CD/SACD player can read DSD files “natively” I think. All that I need is to burn these dsd files into a dvd-r disc. In my case, seems to be the best way to listening to high-quality rips because the built-in DAC of the amplifier it isn’t very good.

Later I will share here my experience.

  1. Compared to the CD version here you can see a much more organized sound. The high frequencies are much more “listenable” and the sound around them is less noisy, less annoying and very natural. When the sound goes more poweful we can taste the details in the low-end frequencies.

Yet, I feel that in some instruments the sound seems less high in terms of volume. Like if the CD version had some kind of “equalization” in certain parts.

    Thanks again!

  2. You’ve got it!
Thank you, dear Alfredo! I’ve waited for this so long! There is a number of rips in the web, but I wanted only version by Rach, because this is a reference for me now.
I know, you ripped this recording before, but I don’t believe much in Cesky sound and I didn’t DL it, since, even reissued, RCA LS pressing is better.
As to the performance, it is the definitive Scheherazade! The only rival to Reiner is Sir Thomas Beecham.
They say that Beecham’s version is adored by kids, hm, this version shall be appreciated by … adults. Anyway both recordings are equally great!

    1. Thank you…check my other “Scheherazade” by Darlington…is another real contendent to Reiner, although Reiner is unbeatable. Check also the Reissue NightOwl made some months ago…is really good.
