HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) G. Verdi – La Forza Del Destino (Tebaldi/Del Monaco)

Stop searching for a great „Forza“, my friends. This 1955 recording (Stereo version issued 1959) is the best complete work by Verdi you can find. Still unbeaten after 58 years!

It is very difficult to get accoustically good recordings of them, and this Decca 1955 stereo complete studio recording is nothing short of a miracle.

This historical 1955 recording was the first to gather an all stars cast covering all the 6 main roles. Never before and never after at this level for sure. All singers are caught here at their absolute best, and their best was something we do not hear these days. Molinari Pradelli, who was one of the leading conductors of the era, today sounds a bit outdated, nevertheless it holds the ship with authority like many of his peers of the period (Gavazzeni, Erede, Capuana,a/o).

The singers are absolutely the best for the role, Del Monaco sings with fierce voice when required, but can be tender lover for his Leonora, and his dynamics are fine. He shows it in his main aria (after the recitativo “la vita è inferno all’infelice” at the start of the aria ” O tu che in seno agli angeli”)and in various other occasions (“ne gustare m’è dato un’ora di quiete”, after the battle and in other moments) where he holds the voice showing that he could do it when required.

Those who talk about loud singing simply go for stereotypes without having listened properly to the recording. It is a pleasure to listen to his duets with the great Bastianini. Renata Tebaldi, is Leonora, no one else can come close. Her “La Vergine degli Angeli” is said to have caused some conversions to catholicism. Be it as it may, surely we are looking at something never repeated after. Her partnership with del Monaco here is probably at its best. Bastianini had probably the most beautiful baritone voice ever recorded, even if at times this was privileged over technical accuracy. Despite this, his Don Carlo keeps at far distance any other and his duets with Mario are simply electrifying. Siepi was the best bass voice those days and his “morbidezza” was legendary.

No score could cause him any trouble, and Forza does not take him to task, he flies high with class and elegance, greatly missed after his retirement. Corena, basso buffo, is at ease in the clownish Fra’ Melitone role even if some top notes present clearly some problems. Simionato was a luxury for Preziosilla role and she delivers it with ease, but it was not her role and the impression is more of a marketing necessity rather than anything else.

All the other minor roles are covered with dignity by those involved. This recording, to me, is one of the few that can be considered “perfect” in the sense that all gave their absolute best and they were also at their best at that particular time. Rare occurrence.

  1. Das ist wunderbar! Fielen danken, mein Freund Rachmann.. You realy touched my heart 🙄
A bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau, or WHATEVER you prefer, on me!

  2. Night-shift, Rachmaninov? Are we so much similar? A piece of an opera, just to forget, between two dramatic moments during a night shift ?… Anyway, thank you a lot for all your posts! Discovered your site recently. Some wonderful CDs here! Bless you!

    • Hi friend….this was a special gift to my friend Fedorych, that asked for a “forza” didn’t knowing that i had “THE” forza-recording…..just because he is at this opera live, tomorrow, somewhere in Russia. That lucky guy 🙂

  3. Amico, something wrong with Part 8 (side 7) of The Night Shift 🙁
It’s still 9 hours till the curtains rise!

Sound is great, Voices divine, Verdi immortal..

  4. Just back home from “a night in the opera”..
The show was TOTAL DISASTER 😥 😥 😥
The Poor Stage-Director tried his best to reanimate the silly eclectic libretto.. but in vain.. no surprise for me that Verdi changed his librettist after this opus!
I’d better stay home and listen to the marvelous recording from fratello Rachmagni 😆

    • well said, bratha…. 🙂

PS: I have some more jewels with Tebaldi/Del Monaco. My beloved wife can’t hear anymore, that i’m always speaking of Del Monaco as the best tenor of all time. But it’s true, he was really perfect: a voice like none such, with “bronze”, with a tear, when necessary, with an incredible “spinta” and progression, that always causes you a chicken skin on your arms and neck, a tremendous voice paired with a sensational dramatic act and sense for the scene, with a face like a Hollywood actor.

PPS: sorry, that your opera-evening was a disaster. But Rubin is 1:0 in front vs. the danish. and my Inter has difficulties to keep a 0:0 at home 🙁

      • Hey Racha, its unbelievable feeling to read your fraternal comments! Incredible Rubin/DelMonaco cocktail 😆
Drink another glass of Beaujolais for you, your beloved wife, Inter and the Box!!!!!!!!
        Cheers, brothers 😆

          • Thank you, fratello….but Inter is another team in comparation to last season. The key was Mourinho, the SpecialOne….Rafa is a poor dilettant in face of Mou. Inter will go out in semifinal. Amen !

A glass of good Riesling to your health ! 🙂

I am loathe to complain because I love your stuff you upload. So I’ll put it this way:

Could you check the lemgth of this Link. On the one I downloaded it is only a little more than 23 minutes. It stops jus before Alvaro throws down hid gun and it kills Calatrava. Side 2 begins immediately where it should. I used to own this LP from the 1950’s when I bought it.
It’s a great recording, but I was so looking forward to your sound enhancements.
They were so poerful the exploded the Link and lost the last few minutes.
Help, good sir. And thanks for your great work.

    Bob in the USA

    • Hi Bob….
dear, i will check this tomorrow – sorry, it was a long work day for me and my son starts to call me “uncle” 🙂

Seriously….do i understand you right, that side 1 ends after gun shot?

As wrote, i check it tomorrow (when you’re always sleeping) 🙂 and in your afternoon i hope that’s all right again.

      Take care.

  6. Dear Uncle Rachmaninov,

Thanks for your response. Link one ends before (prior to) the gunshot. MDM & Tebaldi have finished their duet about “andiamo, andiamo” and a few bars of transition and it dies – kaput.

At your convenience, kind sir. Get some rest.
    Bob from USA

  7. Dear sleeping Rachmaninov:

Do not waste your time on that link. I just played it again and it completed perfectly, shot and all!

    Thanks that you care;

    Bob from Georgia, USA

  8. Dear Rachmaninov, could you please reup this wonderful version of “La forza”? It would be incredible to hear it in vinyl rip!!!!

    Thanks again.

  9. I am elated for two reasons:
    1. I could not AGREE more (for those not familiar with English, that means your review is the best: ‘I could not improve on it!’) with your writeup on this recording!!! That leads me to #2.

    2. I DLd this in 2010. I searched my files & couldn’t find it anywhere, then it occurred to me about the external Hard Drive that crashed was all Verdi and Rossini.

So thanks, and thanks, and ever thanks fo this re-UP.
    Bravo for Alf!

  10. Never heard it before, that means it’s time to receed my music ignorance some more. Just googled up this opera was written by Verdi for St.Petersburg’s Bolshoi Theatre. That’s a nice piece of history, then.
    Thank you!

  11. Thank you for sharing this rare vinyl and for doing your utmost to provide a high quality transfer. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

  12. Dear Rach

You are right, we are invited to your table to dine on these sublime morsels but churlishly cannot be bothered to thank you for your efforts! I am an offender but will try assiduously from now on to thank you for your efforts
