Since being bitten by “the Mahler bug,” I’ve been doing a lot of research.

Just about everything I’ve read said that this is the best performance of Mahler’s 3rd Symphony. This is new music to me, so I can’t make any comparisons yet, But I will say this. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The performance is exciting and the sound quality is stunning. Very highly recommended.

  1. Horenstein is excellent with Mahler, a few other Mahler 3’s to check out would be Barbirolli and the Halle Orchestra as well as Bernstein’s first release with the New York Phil from the 60’s.

  2. wow… my greatest love in Mahler: his Third, performed by Horenstein.
i own it on a later Unicorn-Kanchana CD replica and know about the existing 24/96 rip on rutracker done from an Ex copy.
as for me, there are just 2 competittive renditions of this masterpiece:
live one with the same forces, broadcast by BBC3 before this studio work and the ultra-rare recording on SPA done by Charles Adler with Hilda Rössl-Majdan as the soloist and Viennese singing and orchestral forces.
    this work definitely deserves listening…
