A self-recommending super bargain

Ten discs encompassing the best of Charles Munch’s recordings of his favourite composer in sometimes spectacular sound in a super-bargain box set; irresistible for any Berlioz aficionado like me, regardless of whether you already own some of these performances or are debating whether you really need another recording of “Roméo et Juliette” or “Symphonie fantastique” – let alone the two more versions of each provided here. Yet neither is simply a duplicate recording; both have their special qualities and can cater for listening in different moods. It is true that Munch exerts a lighter, less disciplined control over his orchestra than such martinets as Reiner or Toscanini, and the occasional imprecision is in evidence, but the results are often thrilling in their improvisatory thrust; I know of no conductor, Bernstein notwithstanding, who takes so many liberties yet whose performance of the symphony is as triumphantly satisfying and thrilling as the 1962 recording here – and the sound is extraordinarily vivid.

Just as that later version is superior to that of 1954, so the later “Roméo” trumps the earlier: the chorus in the earlier versions is ragged, the tenor nowhere near as accomplished as Valletti and likewise the mezzo Rosalind Elias far better in the second recording. In the “Faust”, despite a certain dryness of voice and some limitations up top, no-one rivals baritone Martial Singher for Gallic suavity as Méphistophélès and it is a treat to hear under-recorded and prematurely deceased tenor David Poleri as the eponymous anti-hero. All the orchestral contributions showcase the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a specialist Berlioz band and Munch’s feeling for Berlioz’s febrile, mercurial plasticity is unrivalled. A young, sensuous-voiced Victoria de los Ángeles in “Nuits d’été”, a superb Simoneau in this celebrated version of the”Requiem”, the most expressive and reliable team of singers in a tender and dramatic “L’Enfance du Christ”, possibly the best of the three recordings of “Harold en Italie” by William Primrose (Toscanini’s “Primoroso”) – quel embarras de richesses!

  1. Whatever, as Bob says, you are better than Santa. And, as I’am in Spain, I add that you are the Holy Kings in one. ¡Viva Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar!
    Thank you as usual, Whatever.

  2. Thanks for this, I already have some these performances including the classic performance of the Requiem (on SACD!). So I downloaded cd’s 5-6 and 9-10.

Munch really was a master interpreter of Berlioz.
