HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Chandos) Dmitri Shostakovich – Symphonies 1 & 6 (Järvi)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for the record
Dmitri Shostakovich, living during the harrowing days of the Stalin regime, wrote many of his works carefully, cleverly protesting the inhumanity of life under the cruel dictator. Neeme Järvi’s SNO account on Chandos is with no doubt the most powerful, implacable, shocking and devastating recorded performance ever done. Järvi’s wonderful approach is typical of the trenchant, uncompromising `Shostakovich sound’ that we only find in great Shostakovich conductors as he is. This spectacularly recorded disc from 1985 preserves a completely gripping delivery of the two symphonies. This is one of Jarvi’s most successful discs, even among the considerable number of high quality he made with this orchestra for Chandos. This is a clear example that for sheer involvement and edge of the seat excitement, this combination is hard to match when on this sort of top form.

“Louis Thiry is an extraordinary organist. An accomplished virtuoso, an all-round musician, with unequaled memory and skill: he may be classed among the heroes of music (he has given several fine performances of my most difficult organ works – in particular my “Messe de la Pentecôte”). All those who have heard and all those who will hear Louis Thiry can but admire him.”

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Camille Saint-Saens – Piano Concerti 3 & 5 (Collard, Previn)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this beauty
Featuring the superb piano stylings of renowned French Pianist Jean-Phillippe Collard.
Saint Saëns, acclaimed for his sense of drama and ability to evoke mystery in his compositions, crafted five piano concertos over the course of his life, though only No. 2 garnered commercial success.Camille Saint-Saens’ sense of drama, his lyric runs, all make this listening experience highly recommended. I am fascinated by the way Saint-Saens creates rich variations of his themes as he takes us from movement to movement. Saint-Saens has the ability to develop ethereal melodies and variations on themes that are hypnotic and mystical. His piano runs are pushed for dramatic effect. The creative and amusing variations of his themes are pleasant and amusing.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Igor Stravinsky – Pulcinella-Suite/Dumbarton Oaks/8 Instrumental Miniatures (Orpheus Chamber Orchestra)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend RifRaf for this rarity
It’s nice to hear the Pulcinella performed outside of its suite format, and this record offers the whole ballet score. I can’t compare it to other recordings, but the sound here is crisp and distinct, and the vocal soloists generally add to the vibrant harmonies of the small orchestra, rather than detract. Pulcinella is Stravinsky’s departure, so to speak, from his early modernist blockbusters like Rite and Petrushka, and his genesis in the neoclassical. A great piece of art.
The record also offers another of his later works, a piece that supposedly tried to emulate Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, but seems to me more modernist than neoclassical. All in all, this is a good addition to Pulcinella.
The record closes by playing some of the original 18th century chamber music from which Stravinsky made his Pulcinella.

front-small-boxset
You surely have seen in your life such a situation: when a very important person died, the program on TV was changed or there were some extraordinary documentaries about.

When Mario Del Monaco died in 1982, the world should have stand still for a moment, but nothing happened: no extra docus about him on TV, no changed programs….what a shame. These were the words of my beloved uncle, the greatest fan of Super-Mario, who made of me also a great operatic lover and fan of Del Monaco. So many records of Del Monaco I’ve posted (and still I will post in the near future) are part of his collection, that he wanted me to get, when his time was coming.
Tell me: have you ever heard Mario singing Wagner? (Walküre + Lohengrin on Vol.3)
Please, enjoy the world greatest opera singer ever!!!!!!!
