This is one of the best albums that I have heard on Brahms over any other recordings of the prominent cellists.

György Sebök and János Starker have collaborated in a number of recordings and this is amongst the best. Sebok is a very accomplished pianist and Starker’s characteristically strong (almost bold) approach is well suited to the material which by Brahmsian standards, in places is unusually contemplative – even wistful – yet still possessing the hallmarks of his assertive style. The Mendelssohn second Sonata also is excellent – a pity that it was not possible to include the first Mendelssohn ‘cello Sonata as well.

Musically, this is a first class offering as might be expected of these consummate instrumentalists but in my view its chief virtue is the piano/’cello balance which is quite excellent; so often the ‘cello is overwhelmed to the point of inaudibility by 9 feet of Steinway.

Highly recommended.

  1. Good Lord, Al, I got this awhile back, and just NOW listened to it! This is incredible!

An absolutely perfect rip, and a stunning recording! Thanks a million, fellow!

  2. Sound is so ridiculously good that I had a laugh when I pressed the “play” button… Your new rip literally blow away the previous one (also because of the needle issue you had causing distorted sound). Magnificent !

    1. In 2 hours I (we) make people really crazy….let them compare these two sonatas with them by Firkusny/Fournier…
      😉
      I know, I’m a “bastard-inside” man…

      1. Oh la la !

Hahaha. Second laugh of the day with your “bastard-inside”.

IMO and with Barenboim/du Pre, among the greatest performances in history of the two pieces.
The three of them are so different and yet so perfect, each in its own way.
        Thanks !

  3. I remember the DGG sound for this recording cannot be compared to the Mercury one (in particular a notable lack of bass for the piano) but the performance of the Firkusny/Fournier team “fears” no one. 😉
