The Schubert “Great” C Major Symphony has been variusly numbered 7, 8, and 9. Here in this live Kubelik performance it passes as the Eighth. At 47 min. the pace is decidedly fast, and Kubelik evokes high spirits from his Bavarian Radio musicians. He is most comfortable when the musicmaking is natural and unforced, as it is here. Kubelik sees the C Major as a sunny, uncomplicated work, a valid approach even if inner detail and phrasing are nothing special. That detracts lttle from a thoroughly uplifting performance, perhaps the most optimistic I’ve ever heard.

  1. Dear Rachmaninov,

First of all a big, really big thanks to you and whatever for the wonderful job you do.

Secondly, the “N° 8” acorded to the “Great” is not a misprint. In the revised version of the Deutsch catalogue, 8 is the assigned number to the Symphony in C, (D. 944) and the “Unfinished” is the N° 7!. That is because the so-called “N° 7” (E Major, D. 729) remained as a draft (Schubert orchestrated only the beginning of the first movement). Certainly this is an unsolved issue in Schubert’s oeuvre. The debate is not finished (maybe never will be).

Again, big thanks. You deserve more than a beer 🙂
