I find Häggander’s voice exceedingly colorful and beautiful. It is not a belcanto voice, but this is not belcanto music and I absolutely love the slightly smoky sound of her voice, and her musical performance of Luonnotar is outstanding – by far the best I ever heard, from the carefully shaped piano lines to the climax in the middle which she attacks with enormous power.

To most Sibelians, the Finnish composer’s vocal music remains an unknown world. And what a world! The best of the orchestral songs on this compilation, particularly the amazing, closing “Luonnotar,” offer hints of where his art might have moved, had Sibelius kept producing music beyond his last orchestral works of the mid 1920s. As it happens, the orchestration of another of the songs, a striking version (sung in Swedish) of Shakespeare’s “Come Away Death,” dates from the last months of the composer’s life in 1957 — making it one of a tiny handful of revisions from his pen dating to his final, silent, 30 years.
Both singers, baritone Jorma Hynninen and soprano Mari Anne Haggander, have a perfect idiomatic grasp of the music and the voices to handle its furthest demands.

    • Hi…just downloaded from HF and unpacked: everything runs fine. You’re the first one that reports this. maybe something went wrong during DL? Try it again, if possible in a session, without interruptions (interrupts-resume-interrupts-resume can cause CCR-errors).
