HD-Vinyl 24/96 (EMI) Jules Massenet – Manon (Cotrubas, Kraus)

front-small-boxset
Thank you Bob for this gem
This Manon has long been overshadowed by great recordings with the likes of Beverly Sills, Victoria de Los Angeles, and Angela Gheorghiu as the opera’s title role. Ileana Cotrubas was a Romanian soprano famous for singing lighter roles, most notably a Violetta with Carlos Kleiber on Deutsche Grammophone. Cotrubas probes into Manon like no other and dazzles us with coloratura that the soprano could call her own. She also had an innocent quality about her voice which made her less lusty but more feminine than – for example – Maria Callas. These are the reasons why I like very much this recording of Manon.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) Giuseppe Verdi – Rigoletto (Moffo/Kraus/Merrill/Solti)

Many thanks for this masterpiece to our friend Jean-Luc
I learned that this recording was just removed from the RCA print list. What a shame and what a stupid thing to do. This is one of the finest Rigoletto ever produced. The dream cast includes Bob Merrill, Anna Moffo (one of her finest recordings), Alfredo Kraus, Roz Elias, Ezio Flagello, and conducted by Solti in a bright, vibrant, and stunning recording–sharp vocals, quality orchestra throughout, finest mixing. The production is also one of the most dramatic Rigolettos ever, which is as it should be. Rigoletto is after all a descent into evil and revenge, and this recording does it justice throughout. I can listen to this recording over and over. A true modern masterpiece.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – La Traviata (Scotto, Kraus, Bruson, Muti)

front-small-boxsetMany many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this precious gift
What Muti does in the party scene in the 1st act is unbelievable. His fast tempos fits extremely well. Scotto’s voice is, of course, quite different from Votto’s recording. I am very found of Scotto’s freshness on that recording. She went through this highly difficult score with an apparent easiness that is admirable. On this recording, she is more dense (her tone reminds me Cortubas or maybe it is vice-versa). Nevertheless, it is a wonderful accomplishment. Kraus sounds very similar as his Duke in the Rigoletto recording with Beverly Sills. Incredible fresh voice for his age. Bruson is okay. That duet on the second act is so beautiful that it is very hard to mess up.
Brand new box&vinyls, played here for the very 1st time.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (EMI) Giuseppe Verdi – Rigoletto (Milnes/Sills/Kraus)

 front-small-boxset
Although my personal favourite – and IHMO best version on earth – the Sutherland/Pavarotti/Milnes recording from 1973 is, this Rigoletto is absolutely wonderful. Rudel conducted firmly but not magnificently, but the cast is magnificent. Milnes (also the title role in the Rigoletto with Sutherland and Pavarotti) is the best ever, no doubt. Always touching and powerful, his acting is amazing and his screams of “Gilda! Mia Gilda! Ah, la maledizione!” are unrivalled. Without any doubt, Milnes is one of the greatest baritones ever been on earth

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (RCA) Giuseppe Verdi – Falstaff (Evans/Kraus/Merrill/Freni)

Many thanks to our friend from Michigan Lake for this gift.
This is the recording by which others should be judged. Solti captures the raucousness of Falstaff, using and emphasizing the horns like great comedic guffaws. Geraint Evans oozes unctiousness and Freni sweetly takes on the only aria in the whole opera.
