HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Decca) Domenico Scarlatti, Antonio Soler – Piano Sonatas (De Larrocha)

Many thanks to our generous friend Jean-Luc for the vinyl
This is a classic recording, both in terms of the performance and the recorded sound itself…AdL’s radiance is captured perfectly. The two composers on this record are great Baroque voices from Spain and Italy, all of whom write to ADL’s strengths. She plays them at perfect tempi, with agility, rhythmic elan, power and beauty. Soler may be the least well known bur does not deserve to be, an early voice from Larrocha’s Spain.

HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Decca) Mozart – Piano Sonatas K311, K330, Fantasia K397 – Haydn – Andante and Variations in F Minor (De Larrocha)

Many thanks to our generous friend Jean-Luc for the vinyl
This disc demonstrates the unique characteristics of De Larrocha’s pianism which made her the beloved musician she became: her flawless sense of rhythm, perfectly judged rubato, beautiful tone, brilliant technique, and her non-excessive tempos. Although some other pianists’ technique is superior to De Larrocha, there’s just something about de Larrocha’s playing that I’ve always found very endearing. Other pianists may be able to play the notes as well as she, but who else invests this music with the unmistakable style which is so instantly recognizable as being De Larrocha after hearing her play only a few bars?

Many thanks to our generous friend Jean-Luc for the vinyl
Although she was best known for her performances of Spanish music, the great pianist Alicia de Larrocha (1923 – 2009) also was a renowned performer of Mozart and Beethoven. This is a fine recording to hear in itself for those wanting this particular combination of Mozart and Beethoven piano works. The recording also is valuable for admirers of Alicia de Larrocha, and it helps to expand and preserve her legacy.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Erato) Granados – Goyescas/Escenas Romanticas (De Larrocha)

front-small-boxset All thanks for these gems go to Jean-Luc
Alicia De Larrocha playing Granados. They were made for each other. Simply stellar albums.
Granados composed some excellent music and some of the pieces in these suites really stand out. Alicia de Larrocha is one of those pianists whose mastery in certain repertoire is unparalleled, and mostly unchallenged. Even though her recordings of mozart, schumann, are always well poised and balanced, her mastery of the Spanish repertoire is such that her other acheivements stand small in comparison.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Erato) Isaac Albeniz – Iberia, Vol. 3, 4 (De Larrocha)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to Jean-Luc for these magnificent pearls
Note: Maybe you miss Vol. 1 & 2? Some years before, the two volumes were called “Iberia” Vol. 1 and 2,  released as single records. Then, years later the two “Iberia” Volumes were integrated in a cycle of four LPs, named Works For Piano (L’Oeuvre Pour Piano) with a different cover.
These recordings are of truly top notch piano playing which undeniably surpasses either of Larrocha’s other two recordings of Iberia because of it’s supreame technical mastery, rhythmic vitality and corloristic wizardry and ease of these fiendishly difficult, yet beautiful works. Complaints about sound quality in this recording are irrelevant, especially since it is not that pronounced. Besides, one who listens to the great recordings of Cortot, Rachmaninov, Hoffman, etc. knows the value of the actual performance over the sound quality.
