HD-Vinyl 24/96 (DGG) Anna Netrebko – Verismo (Pappano)

The lady is a marvel. She seems incapable to do wrong. She has the voice for every one of her selections. Admittedly, Anna Netrebko is the favorite soprano in this household, but I was skeptical about purchasing this album. There were mixed reviews of some of the old standards, and generally I have found that I lose interest in these compilation albums after a playing or two. Not so with this album! Her interpretations are heartfelt and reflect the maturing of her voice into the large and lush instrument it has become. It is a treat to hear her Puccini, and the selections from Manon stand alone very successfully. I enjoy this album over and over. If you are a fan of Anna’s glorious singing, you will too.

front_small_boxsetBeniamino GigliĀ  was the most famous tenor of his generation, he was renowned internationally for the great beauty of his voice and the soundness of his vocal technique. Music critics sometimes took him to task, however, for what was perceived to be the over-emotionalism of his interpretations. Nevertheless, such was Gigli’s talent, he is considered to be one of the very finest tenors in the recorded history of music.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Amilcare Ponchielli – La Gioconda (Tebaldi/Bergonzi/Merrill)

Many thanks to our friend BOB for this beauty
I never quite realised how much I appreciate this recording until I saw Tebaldi singing “Suicidio!”. Her massive voice, which she was able to tune down when required and sing the warmest phrase, had matured by the mid 60s when she tackled the role on stage and made it ideal for this dangerous role. Combined with her commanding stage presence it’s no wonder she received such huge acclaim as Gioconda.
