HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Decca) Joseph Haydn – Symphonies 93 – 104 (Dorati)

Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this fine collection
These performances have been a mainstay of the classical music world since they were first recorded and released (the recordings were made over a three and a half year period beginning in July 1969 and continuing through December 1972, with the first releases made on LP in 1970). Dorati’s project was just the second to record the complete Haydn symphonies, following Ernst Märzendorfer and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, in very limited release on LP and infrequently mentioned today.

Please, pay attention: due to some errors on naming the last four Symphonies
(101 was actually 103, 102 was actually 104…and vice-versa),
I uploaded 5 archives with the symphonies 101-104 with the right names now. Please, DL them and replace the old files. Thank you!

HD-Vinyl Mono 24/96 (Odyssey) Liszt – Piano Concerto No. 2 – Weber – Konzertstück (Casadesus/Szell)

Many thanks to Trottar for this rarity
This is truly an inspired version of these concertos. Szell and Casadesus work marvellously together to really bring these pieces to life. Casadesus is remarkably short on certain cadenzas, but, while this seems strange at first, the overall effect is to keep the pieces light and radiating a simple beauty. So often these concertos are overburdened with excessive ornamentation that detract from the overall effect of the music. Casadesus manages to ornament beautifully without losing the point of the music. It is brilliantly played and a joy to listen to.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Decca) Joseph Haydn – Symphonies No. 60 & 67 (Dorati)

Many thanks to Jean-Luc for continuing the Haydn-Symphonies
Haydn was a remarkable composer. He has yet to be discovered by most listeners…I mean, REALLY discovered and relished. For after all, as the Kapellmeister to Prince Nicholas Esterhazy for so much of his lifetime, Haydn had to create entertainment for his Prince and his “occasions”. So Haydn wrote the music, repaired the instruments, saw to it his musicians were happy, and kept Prince Nicholas totally enthralled. For recreation Haydn would go on a royal hunt, a sport he dearly loved and which shows up in his music…

NEW FILES AT FF!

From the Decca website:

In the 1960s Decca pioneered the use of a multi 10-channel console mixer which created recordings with an unprecedented sense of spatial realism and movement – Phase 4 Stereo. Following in the footsteps of Decca’s highly-successful label heritage sets (The Decca Sound, Mercury Living Presence), this generous selection of the very best of Phase 4 promises to amaze a new generation of fans.

Two of the titles included in the set are on the TAS List – the Holy Grail of vinyl fidelity. This is a list of recordings recommended by The Absolute Sound magazine under the direction of Harry Pearson. Those two titles are The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann and Miklós Rózsa: Music From Ben Hur.

This was another of those albums that looked clean, but was fairly noisy when actually listening to it. After considerable cleanup work, I’m happy to say that it gets TheNightOwl’s seal of approval. Nice warm MLP sound. Enjoy!

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Peter Tchaikowsky – The Sleeping Beauty (Dorati)

front-small-boxsetAll thanks fly to Jean-Luc for this beauty
Antal Dorati was the Tchaikovsky Ballet pioneer. For Mercury Living Presence, he made the first-ever recordings of the complete versions of the Russian composer’s three great ballets. But Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty were mono recordings; he did two versions of Nutcracker, one mono and one stereo. So this stereo remake of Tchaikovsky’s greatest ballet was highly anticipated, particularly as it features the incomparable Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. True to form, the performance is magnificently played and warmly recorded. A no-brainer. — David Hurwitz.

HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Mercury) Joseph Haydn – Symphony No. 100 In G – Symphony No. 101 In D Major (Dorati)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this
Antal Dorati’s legendary traversal of the Haydn symphonies was for many years the only complete set (by one conductor and orchestra) of the symphonies. Today, although there are some other complete sets as well as many great period performances, Dorati’s cycle still reigns supreme. Dorati manages to make these works still sound fresh and vibrate after two hundred years. There is a level of spontaneity, as well as an ever obvious sense of joy that make the Dorati traversal the best. It may seem like hyperbole, but Dorati is as close as you will get to “perfect” when it comes to Haydn.

HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Philips) Leo Delibes – Coppélia – Complete Ballet Music (Dorati)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
Stunning sound here, my friends (Mercury recording). The instruments used, especially the effect of the mechanical Coppelia is life like and so real. Antal Dorati is – no doubt – one of the best ballet conductors. One of the most frequent oblivions in which many people tend to fall and overlook is the extraordinary vision and distinctive refinement of Dorati as ballet interpreter. As a matter of fact, while Stokowoski and Fistoulari commanded in this sense the idiosyncratic supremacy, Dorati with very low profile achieved important musical triumphs with the genre of the classical ballet. Distinctness, limpid intonation, textures, harmonies and expressiveness were some of the most important elements you will realize at the moment to listen him.

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/96 (Mercury) Bela Bartok – The Wooden Prince (Dorati)

front-small-boxsetMany thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
Antal Dorati really has this one wrapped up–as a great ballet conductor, Hungarian, and friend of the composer, he brings a special authority to Bartók’s allegorical ballet The Wooden Prince. This is Bartók at his most Romantically evocative, with orchestral writing full of shimmering textures and exotic sounds. This was the first stereo recording of the complete ballet, and it remains one of the finest, both in sound and performance. — David Hurwitz

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Mercury) Bela Bartok – Dance Suite, Deux Portraits, Mikrokosmos (Dorati)

front-small-boxset Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this marvellous record
Yet for my money this disc is “where it’s at,” to use street slang. Dorati gives us stunning clarity and some real insights into a work that’s a lot more complex than other recordings will have you realize. There are inner details revealing Bartok’s complex cross-rhythms that often get lost in the frenzy of brass and percussion in many performances. Amazingly, this recording is as powerful and, well, “loud” as any other, yet all the delicate detail shows through. You’ll hear lines you never heard before, and discover phrases to be make up of combinations of instruments you didn’t realize.

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Mercury) Richard Strauss – “Rosenkavalier”-Suite/Till Eulenspiegen (Dorati)

front-small-boxsetThousand thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
In this one superlative disk you can hear why Dorati was considered one of Strauss’s greatest interpreters. Throughout his career, from the days of the Ballet Russe in the ’30s and ’40s to the Detroit Symphony recordings of the ’70s and ’80s, Dorati followed Strauss scholarship closely and shared his admiration of Strauss with audiences in stunning and communicative performances. These are from his Minneapolis years and the performances are knockouts. The maestro plays fair by the composer, but there’s an almost operatic type of scene organization that allows him to build drama and lead us through the ebbs and tides of Straussian psychology.
