HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Mercury) Igor Stravinsky – Petrouchka (Dorati)

front-small-boxsetAll thanks for this pearl go to our friend Jean-Luc
“Together with Stravinsky’s ‘Le Sacre du Printemps’ , Ravel’s ‘Daphnis and Chloë’ and the Tchaikovsky dance masterpieces ‘Swan Lake’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘The Nutcracker’, this disc of Stravinsky’s Petrouchka takes its place among the series of definitive recorded documentations of ballet masterpieces undertaken by Antal Dorati and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra for Mercury Living Presence.

Audiophile HD-Vinyls 24/192 (Mercury) Richard Strauss – “Rosenkavalier”-Suite/Till Eulenspiegen (Dorati)

front-small-boxsetThousand thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
In this one superlative disk you can hear why Dorati was considered one of Strauss’s greatest interpreters. Throughout his career, from the days of the Ballet Russe in the ’30s and ’40s to the Detroit Symphony recordings of the ’70s and ’80s, Dorati followed Strauss scholarship closely and shared his admiration of Strauss with audiences in stunning and communicative performances. These are from his Minneapolis years and the performances are knockouts. The maestro plays fair by the composer, but there’s an almost operatic type of scene organization that allows him to build drama and lead us through the ebbs and tides of Straussian psychology.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Mercury) Peter Tchaikovsky – Symphonies Nos. 1, 2, & 3 (Dorati)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to our friend Jean-Luc for this gem
Antal Dorati was a superb Tchaikovsky conductor, and we are fortunate that Mercury captured so many of his performances for posterity in such fine sound. The first three symphonies don’t get much play; the Second pops up now and then on concert programs, which is a pity. They are colorful, full of the good tunes for which the composer is famous, and reasonable in length. In short, they are entirely typical of the composer, and I defy anyone to listen to the very opening of the First Symphony (subtitled Winter Dreams) and not be immediately enchanted. In fact, all three symphonies have nicknames: Winter Dreams, Little Russian, and Polish, respectively, thereby disproving the musical rule that the “name” pieces are always the most popular. Never mind, this music will give you a lot of pleasure.

HD-Vinyl 24/96 (Mercury) Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” (Antal Dorati)

front-small-boxset Many many thanks to Jean-Luc for this precious gem
Antal Dorati was largely underrated because he was overshadowed by such eminent, brand-name conductors as Karajan, Bernstein, Mehta and Solti. But Dorati’s legacy lives on through copious record albums. Dorati was no stranger to Classical, Romantic and 20th century repertoire as his records attest. This is one of the most vibrant, epic and expressive Eroica, in the market, whose historical trace is still taken into account by critics and great audiences. And the superb stature of this version makes me wonder about the hidden reason of not having been released on CD all the time. Only some months ago it is now available on the newest Living Presence collection. This is an overwhelming performance.

HD-Vinyl Mono 24/96 (Mercury) Antonin Dvorak – The Slavonic Dances (Dorati)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks to Jean-Luc for these gems
Antal Dorati recorded the Slavonic Dances complete at least three times, and this set is the best of the lot. A superb orchestral trainer, he had the Minneapolis Symphony playing at a very high level, and his interpretation is one of the most exciting around: ferociously rhythmic, with brilliant contributions from winds, brass, and percussion. Mercury’s sound is similarly razor sharp, up close, and personal. –David Hurwitz

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Philips) Pjotr Tchaikowsky – The Nutcracker (Dorati)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks for this beauty to our friend Jean-Luc
Antal Dorati was probably the great dance conductor of our age, and he pioneered recording the complete Tchaikovsky ballets. He made an outstanding stereo Nutcracker for Mercury Living Presence. Fine as that version is, this one is even better because the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra simply plays the music more elegantly than the London Symphony Orchestra on the earlier recording. In fact, this has been the version of choice for a couple of decades now. –David Hurwitz

Audiophile HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Mercury) Sergeji Rachmaninov – Piano Concerto No. 3 (Janis/Dorati)

front-small-boxset
Many thanks for this beauty to our friend Jean-Luc
Rachmaninov wrote four concerti for the instrument, but the middle two are by far the best known (and best loved) of the four. For many years, the 2nd Piano Concerto, largely thanks to its “Full Moon and Empty Arms” theme in the final movement, was more popular with audiences and listeners than the 3rd. But, thanks largely to the dramatized travails of the Australian pianist David Helfgott in the movie “Shine,” the race, as it were, is much closer. The 3rd definitely places much higher technical demands on the soloist.

Super HD-Vinyl 24/192 (Mercury) Antonin Dvorak – Cello Concerto (Starker/Dorati) 180g Speakers Corner Edition

front_small_boxset
Many thanks to our friend ONKLE, who made possible this audiophile legend comes through!
There is a rival to this recording out of Berlin, with Rostropovich playing the cello and von Karajan playing the conductor. But Starker and Dorati are so fine in the Dvorak — and the Mercury recording is a marvel of clarity and body — I’ve been able to pass on to other things, never feeling the need for an alternate view. This disk seems to project Dvorak’s view itself, what need for another?
